There are few franchises that are so universally adored they transcend the usual signs of devotion — memorabilia, re-releases, etc. — and actually have an entire day devoted to them. The Alien franchise is one of the select few, celebrated on April 26th, in reference to moon LV-426, where those dastardly Xenomorphs originated from.
Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic was a horror masterpiece, spawning three sequels and a prequel. The latter, Prometheus (2012), was again directed by Scott after he'd left the project after the original. Now firmly back aboard the spaceship, a sequel to that prequel (confused?), Alien: Covenant, is set for release next year.
The Return Of Newt?
But, on Alien day, some of the best news doesn’t derive from Scott’s upcoming project. Sizzling away in the distance is an alternative vision, crafted by director Neill Blomkamp, for an Alien 5 movie. Whereas Scott’s return has focused on events before Alien, Blomkamp’s film will be set after Aliens, disregarding Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.
This news is chest-bustingly exciting, mainly because bypassing Alien 3 would also bypass the deaths of beloved characters — Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn), and Rebecca “Newt” Jorden (Carrie Henn) — without a single clone in sight.
To celebrate, Blomkamp has shared some new and amazing concept art, featuring Newt all grown up:
'It'll Be Worth The Wait'
The awesome image will only increase the demand for Alien 5. While those glass-half-empty people may think the release of Covenant means the project has been scrapped, franchise star Sigourney Weaver reassured fans the film will happen. In comments reported via Aggresive Comix, she said:
"Well, I think it is. Ridley asked Neill not to make our 'Alien' 'til after 'Prometheus 2.' He [Ridley] wanted his movie to shoot and be released first. But it’s an amazing script, and Neill and I are really excited about doing it.
"We’re doing other things until we can get going on that. I’d be really surprised if we didn't do it, because it’s such a great script and we love working together. So, it’s just going to take a little bit longer to get out to you, but it’ll be worth the wait."
Blomkamp, who rose to prominence with the release of his faux-documentary style sci-fi epic District 9, has a treasure trove of Alien concept art scattered over his Instagram page, some of which includes Weaver:
Next Up: Prometheus 2
Fans will have to be patient though, and wait until after Covenant is released. Michael Fassbender will return as David, a synthetic (a.k.a. robotic human) who is the sole inhabitant of a dangerous world and survivor of the Prometheus expedition.
The plot will revolve around the colony ship, Covenant, and the crew on board who discover David's world. It will also delve into the origins of Xenomorphs, discovering how and why they came to be.
Alien: Covenant will be released on August 4, 2017.
What concept are you more excited about?
