Wolverine 3 is proving to be quite the intriguing center of the upcoming Fox-Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that's largely due to the intense speculation that we're going to see an adaptation of the brutally fantastic Old Man Logan saga of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Wolverine comics.
Wolverine's third solo outing isn't expected to land until next March, so we don't know a whole lot about it as it currently stands. But breaking casting news comes our way and it's all getting pretty exciting on the Wolverine 3 front.
A Spanking New Cast Member Signs On
Until recently only two returning X-Men cast members were confirmed — Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Professor X — with Narcos star Boyd Holbrook joining in the fun as the as-yet-unnamed primary antagonist.
But Holbrook won't be the only one causing trouble for Logan, no matter where Wolverine 3 takes him, as The Hollywood Reporter just broke the news that the upcoming movie has added another new player — legendary British screen and television actor Richard E. Grant.
Grant is set to portray a "villainous mad-scientist type" in Wolverine 3, but no further plot details have emerged regarding what this could mean for the movie.
Richard E. Grant
A star of the British film and stage circuit since the 1980s, Grant's indomitable on-screen presence has made him a much sought-after actor and a cult film presence, ever since 1987's Withnail & I and Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992.
He appeared most recently in British TV shows Jekyll & Hyde and Dig, and his role in Wolverine 3 will be his first foray into the world of the superhero. But he's no stranger to playing the villain, from voicing the murderous Barkis Bittern in Tim Burton's Corpse Bride, to portraying Doctor Who baddie The Great Intelligence in three episodes of the sci-fi epic.
Ranking right up there with Benedict Cumberbatch in terms of the presence commanded by his voice alone, Grant will be taking to Hollywood soon enough, as filming for Wolverine 3 is expected to begin as imminently as next month.
How Grant's villainous mad scientist fits into the overall narrative remains to be seen; there's certainly plenty of scope if it is an Old Man Logan adaptation we're seeing. On that note, we'll just have to wait and see — and pray that we're not getting yet another Weapon X adaptation.
Wolverine 3 releases March 3, 2017.
