WARNING: Possible spoilers for The Walking Dead TV and comic series below. Proceed with caution!
Early this week it was reported that The Walking Dead (which begins filming on Season 7 next week) had released a casting call for a character that sounded an awful lot like the comic book character Ezekiel.
While AMC has yet to officially confirm that Ezekiel will be appearing in Season 7 of the show, all signs are pointing to him making an appearance. This includes the fact that two characters who seemed to be from Ezekiel's community, the Kingdom, popped up in Episodes 15 and 16 of Season 6. For those that might be new to all this chat of Ezekiel and the Kingdom, take a look over here to get your bearings.
The character of Ezekiel will likely have a pretty big part in Season 7 of the show, as Rick and the gang gear up for the "All Out War" story arc from the comic series. So, who should play this charismatic and eccentric dude? Take a look at five possible actors who could be cast as Ezekiel (apologies for not including George Clinton in advance!):
I think the Telltale game fans would have my head if I didn't immediately suggest David Fennoy. He's already the voice of Lee Everett in the wildly popular Walking Dead Telltale games series, and there's no denying that Fennoy has Ezekiel's look on lock! At 64-years-old, Fennoy is quite a bit older than the age bracket the casting call asks for (someone in their 40s), though considering the casting call for Negan asked for someone in their 30s or 40s, and we ended up with 50-year-old Jeffrey Dean Morgan, I wouldn't put too much stock in the age range being definitive.
Something that does work against Fennoy is the fact that he is predominantly a voice actor, only making the occasional appearances in TV or film. Who knows though, perhaps pure fan power will be enough to persuade the casting directors that Fennoy would be perfect.
We've already got a ton of Brits in The Walking Dead, so why not add one more with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje! You might already be familiar with Akinnuoye-Agbaje from his appearances in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, The Bourne Identity, and as Mr. Eko in Lost. With such a range of experience in action and drama films and television, surely the 48-year-old would fit into the role of Ezekiel with ease.
Ving Rhames has been in some absolutely huge films over the last few decades, including Pulp Fiction, the Mission: Impossible series, and Dawn of the Dead. Adding him to the cast of The Walking Dead would be an absolute coup. Rhames has already had experience with the zombie genre, starring in the TV movie Zombie Apocalypse in 2011, so in my eyes that totally qualifies him for the role.
Over the years The Walking Dead production has employed an insane amount of cast and crew who all previously worked on the hit series The Wire, including Seth Gilliam (Father Gabriel), Lawrence Gilliard Jr. (Bob), Chad L. Coleman (Tyreese) and Merritt Weaver (Denise). So with that in mind, what about The Wire alum Wendell Pierce for Ezekiel? In addition to his role on The Wire, Pierce has also appeared in Ray Donovan, Suits, and The Odd Couple. Not to mention that his role in thriller The Gift definitely proves he's up for a slightly scarier project.
Lastly, I couldn't resist putting in Morgan Freeman, who at 78-years-old is probably a little too old for the role, but there's absolutely no denying that his charismatic personality would be perfect for Ezekiel.
Not to mention that he's recently been sighted with dreads for his part as Ilderim in the upcoming Ben Hur remake, and he looks exactly how a live-action Ezekiel should look.
The Walking Dead will return with Season 7 in October 2016.
