To celebrate Alien day yesterday, Neill Blomkamp shared a depiction of what an adult Newt would look like in Alien 5. More buzz seems to have been generated around this potential project than Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant.

Well, those of you who are more excited for Blomkamp's interpretation of the franchise are in for a treat. In addition to Sigourney Weaver confirming the film would very much be going ahead, she has now given some insight into the storyline.

The Most Satisfying Ending

Speaking at a Q&A following a screening of Alien yesterday, AVPGalaxy reported her comments as follows:

[Sigourney Weaver] speaks of the script as if – as far as she is concerned – it’s happening already, and in her mind is the 'most satisfying' ending of the story. When first asked about working with Michael Biehn, and their flirtation/romantic relationship in Aliens, she added 'you will see a lot more of that in the next one.'
She continued to say she just wrapped something else with Blomkamp which she can’t talk about, in South Africa. She stated how expansive the Alien 5 story is, and mentioned that, like the other films, Blomkamp’s film has a very particular new vision.

Alien 5 Will Not Replace Alien 3 And Alien Resurrection

There has also been some confusion with the chronology of Blomkamp's Alien 5, and how it would fit with the rest of the franchise. The film has been put on hold until Scott is finished with his story arc, beginning with Prometheus (2012), and succeeded by Covenant (2017).

Prometheus was a prequel set 30 years before the original Alien movie, and Scott's plan is to eventually join up with the original. Many believed Blomkamp's version would disregard Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, allowing fan-favorites Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn), and Rebecca “Newt” Jorden (Carrie Henn) to exist.

However, Weaver also confirmed Alien 5 would in fact not disregard those two movies, but instead would run parallel to them. If this is slightly confusing to you, you're not alone.

Alien: Covenant will be released on August 4, 2017.

What storylines would you like Alien 5 to explore?
