*Spoilers for The Walking Dead comic books up until Issue 144*

We know, we get it. We really do. No one wants to admit that Steven Yeun's much loved Glenn Rhee could be the one with his head on the smashing block when The Walking Dead Season 7 returns to our screens later this year after the infuriating Season 6 finale cliffhanger.

But as we all know, The Walking Dead TV show has never been fully faithful to the comic books from which it takes its name. Though it picks up the wider narrative, there are a lot of elements of the show that are unique to it, and a lot of aspects of the comics that didn't make the jump to screen.

So, it's a little tricky to try and speculate about what will happen on the show based on the books — which gives us hope that Glenn won't meet the same brutal fate he does in the comics. But which other characters could take his place if he is spared, given that they no longer have a narrative in the books?

Abraham Ford

Why He'll Die:

Perhaps the most obvious choice would be Michael Cudlitz's Abraham Ford, as he's the first survivor to fall directly as a result of Negan's orders in the comic books.

While out scouting with Eugene (Josh McDermitt), Abraham is shot through the head with a crossbow bolt, killed as revenge for Rick's actions.

We know now that Abraham was spared this fate, and instead it was Denise Cloyd (Merritt Wever) who paid the price and became the first character to fall at the hands of the Saviors. But this frees up his character for another death, perhaps the season finale death.

Why He Won't Die:

Abraham's gone from being a violent and volatile creature who lost his last chance for hope to finding a place within Rick's group for himself and establishing relationships and the chance for a new family in the midst of the zombie apocalypse.

Abraham's character has only recently started to come full circle, and it feels like there's more story to be told here.

Daryl Dixon

Norman Reedus is Daryl Dixon

Why He'll Die:

Poor Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) looked like he was on death's doorstep in the finale line-up, after being shot by Dwight (Austin Amelio) in the penultimate episode East, and he is another fan favorite who would make for an affecting death in place of Glenn.

Will Daryl have a personal meeting with Lucille?
Will Daryl have a personal meeting with Lucille?

Daryl's fate is always up for speculation as he doesn't appear at all in the comic books (a travesty!), and so the show writers have even more freedom to do whatever the heck they want with him.

Why He Won't Die:

C'mon guys, it's Daryl! Can you image the rioting that would take place if we lost Daryl?

Also, the fact that he was shot might have spared him; Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) isn't really one for taking down the weakest ones of the group, so it's perhaps more likely that he chose someone a bit more intimidating to take down in the finale episode.

But then again, eeny meeny miny moe is a cruel mistress...

Sasha Williams

Sonequa Martin-Green is Sasha Williams

Why She'll Die:

Like Daryl, Sasha Williams (Sonequa Martin-Green) doesn't appear in the comic books, so she can be written out at any time without affecting the overall narrative at all. She also has a burgeoning romance with Abraham Ford, and we know that The Walking Dead likes taking down burgeoning romances for effect (see Denise).

Will Sasha become Negan's first victim?
Will Sasha become Negan's first victim?

Sasha has been on a path of recovery after losing her brother, so it would be all the crueler for her to be taken out at this juncture.

Why She Won't Die:

There are definitely a lot of elements of comic book Andrea (who is still alive in the comics) in Sasha's character; enough so that it could be that Sasha will be taking Andrea's place as the tough as nails sharpshooter of the group as the series moves on.

Or will Sasha and Abraham make it through?

She's also been through a lot, so maybe she'll get a break now (unless her love interest Abraham gets offed, that is.)

Rosita Espinosa

Christian Serratos is Rosita Espinosa

Why She'll Die:

Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos) is one of the more recent major casualties in The Walking Dead comic books, and the way she meets her end is pretty damn brutal — especially when you take into account that she was pregnant at the time of her death and was decapitated by the Whisperers' leader, Alpha.

Her break up with Abraham aside, Rosita has suffered from a lack of character development this season, suggesting that she might be the one about to take the long dirt nap at Negan's hands.

Why She Won't Die:

Despite the fact that it was seriously underplayed in favor of Ezekiel's fate, Rosita's death was a pretty major event, as she serves as one of the many victims of the Whisperers in one of the most shocking reveals of the comic books yet.

This means the show writers might be saving her death for future seasons, when the shit really starts to hit the fan when the Whisperers arrive on scene.
