After years of waiting we finally have the first full trailer for WBA's first R-rated Batman movie Batman: The Killing Joke. Based on arguably the most well known Batman one shot of all time, the film explores the antithetical relationship that batman has with the Clown Prince of Crime. Check out the trailer below.

The central conflict of the story however revolves around the shooting and subsequent sexual assault of Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl. The Killing Joke shows the Joker at his most sadistic as he takes pleasure in the mutilation that has been critiqued as being over the top in it's depowerment of it's female lead. This is just one example of a long history of the comic book phenomenon known as "Women in Refrigerators". A reference to the Green Lantern arc which saw then Lantern Kyle Rayner discovers his girlfriend's mutilated body in his refrigerator.

The national inquisitor reports that the handling of Batgirl in this adaptation will get to see the character develop more as character in her own right than as a plot device used to spur on other male characters arcs. Executive producer Bruce Timm states “The audience gets to spend more time with Barbara Gordon as a person before the events of The Killing Joke”. Should this be the case it certainly would add more weight to the tragedy as fans are allowed to connect to the character in way Alan Moore regrets not doing in the original story.

The animated movie reunites legendary Batman TAS voice work of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill resuming their respective roles as Batman and The Joker. JOining them will be voice actors Tara Strong and Ray wise as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon. The Killing Joke will premiere at San Diego Comic-Con this July.
