Who could replace the iconic gun-slinging action heroin Lara Croft portrayed by the amazing Angelina Jolie you ask? The Hollywood Reporter revealed Thursday that it is none other than Swedish actress Alicia Vikander who is quickly rising up in the ranks of Hollywood elite and becoming a great actress in her own right.
Vikander gained almost immediate notoriety after her stellar performance in Alex Garland's Ex Machina. She won this year's Oscar for best supporting actress in The Danish Girl and was also nominated for a slew of other awards including best actress and supporting actress at the Golden Globes and the British Academy Film Awards. In other words, she brings some very strong acting chops to a role that many pigeonhole as strictly action-based. While I do not expect this iteration of Lara Croft to involve a thorough or intimately deep character study, Vikander's acting ability certainly allows for that as an option especially if the film is an origin tale like the 2015 game Rise of the Tomb Raider.
While a rebooted Tomb Raider film has been the topic of speculation for a while now, casting rumors seemed to only heat up in the last two months with Daisy Ridley being one of the potential candidates to bring Lara Croft back to the big screen. With the film's leading actress solidified, Alicia Vikander provides a whole new level of anticipation that may not have been there otherwise. The Tomb Raider reboot will be directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave) with a release date yet to be determined. We can definitely expect more news to heat up in the coming months.
