Last year, Ariel Winter bravely admitted that she had undergone breast reduction surgery in order to reduce her cup size from a 32F to a 32D. The Modern Family star has since been praised by everyone for both her choice to speak out about the operation and the decision not to hide the scars on the red carpet. Well, praised by almost everyone.
Crystal Workman, Winter's own mother, has come forward to criticize the decision and call her daughter out on her behavior. Workman, who hasn't spoken to the 18-year-old in years, opened up to Inside Edition about how unhappy she was to hear of her daughter's surgery. She stated:
“I don't think anyone at that age should be cutting into their breasts. I am surprised she did it so young and that the doctor did it for her so young."
Winter has been quite vocal about the fact that the change has improved her life, but her mom is still not impressed. When asked about her daughter's choice not to cover her scars at the SAG Awards in February, Workman replied:
“I'm sorry, I just think this is inappropriate. She should never be embarrassed of her scars but she shouldn't be flaunting them.”
The snub comes just weeks after Winter revealed it had been three years since she had spoken to her mother on Good Morning America. The actress said of their relationship:
“It wasn't a supportive loving home. I had a really tough time... This is what she wanted me to do. And she pushed very hard for that. It was in the forefront of her mind instead of giving me what I wanted or needed.”
But it would appear that Workman disputes the claims and denies that she is the overbearing stage mom Winter makes her out to be.
“I didn’t start this battle. I haven’t seen her in three and a half years. I don't know why she is bringing this up. I think Ariel is conjuring up stories to help her career at my expense and I feel as a parent I am being bullied.
She was begging me, ‘I want to be on TV.’ She would say “I can do better than your clients.’ She has never been pushed into the industry. Ariel has wanted to be in the industry since she was 5 years old."
The pair's rocky relationship culminated in a court battle which kicked off in 2013, when Workman was accused of physical and emotional abuse, including slapping, hitting and pushing her daughter. Winter was granted emancipation from her mom just months before she turned 18, but Workman insists that she is actually the victim. She continued:
“I am not a yes person. I am Ariel’s mother. I love her. And Ariel did not approve of my parenting. I have stood by my innocence. I have never, never abused Ariel.
I have been abused physically and I believe all of this is emotional abuse. Ariel should ask herself ‘has Ariel ever raised her hand to her mother? Has Ariel ever done anything that she's ashamed of to her mother?’
Instead of thanking me, she continues to berate me, disrespect, dishonor me and that hurts as a mother.”
Workman concluded her interview by saying that she still hopes for reconciliation with her daughter and would like them to go for counselling. Winter's rep stated:
"As we've stated previously, Ariel is happy and in a great place. We will not comment any further."
