Sailor Moon is one of those franchises that is loved by fans across the world, but do you know all of these surprising facts behind the Sailor Guardians?
1. Sailor Moon was Based on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Power Rangers exploded on the television in 1993 and saw Han Saban laugh all the way to bank due to how highly well received his adaption of Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger was. This lead the creator of Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi, to create her own female inspired team of Superheroines in Sailor Moon. The only differences were, the target audience being female and her heroes were powered by astral bodies and not dinosaurs.
2. Sailor Venus is Cursed so She Will Never Find Love.
Prior to appearing in Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus appeared in her own manga Sailor V. This made Sailor Venus the first of the Sailor Senshi to awaken in the present. However during her solo adventure she faced a foe called Kaitou Ace. Naturally the Guardian of Love triumphed, however he cursed her as he died, telling her she would never find love.
3. 1995 Nearly Saw an American Remake on the Show.
The series was thankfully never given the green-light to go into production, after a private screening saw bad reactions from the audience. The series would have seen a combination of live-action and animation to create the show. Below is a video of the opening that was filmed during the screening. The laughs from the man recording the footage shows how well received the idea was.
4. In the Manga Each Sailor Senshi had her Own Castle.
Sailor Moon's Moon Castle is well known to fans, however many do not know that the members of the Inner and Outer Senshi all have their own castle also. These castles were all only ever seen in the manga, but with Sailor Moon Crystal following the manga so closely fan will surely get to see them soon enough. The castles even had their own names.
- Mercury - Mariner (after the first spacecraft to visit the planet)
- Venus - Magellen (after the craft to map the surface of Venus)
- Mars - Phobos Deimos (after the two micro-moons of Mars)
- Jupiter - Io (after the fourth largest moon of Jupiter)
- Saturn - Titan (after the largest moon of Saturn)
- Uranus - Miranda (after the smallest moon of Uranus)
- Neptune - Triton (after the largest moon of Neptune)
- Pluto - Charon (after the moon of Pluto)
5. Sailor Planet Mix-Up!
Each of the Sailor Senshi represent different power based off of the mythology behind their planets.
- Mercury - Water and Wisdom
- Venus - Love and Beauty
- Moon - Love and Justice
- Mars - War, Flame and Passion
- Jupiter - Protection, thunder and courage
- Uranus - Sky and Flight
- Neptune - Deep Water, Sea, Embrace and Comprehension
However Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn have swapped. In mythology Saturn is a planet said to represent time and space where Pluto has more references to death and silence.
6. Attack are Always Said in English.
As strange as it sounds, the Japanese love to say English words. This could be due to how the English language uses sounds not often used in the Japanese language. All of the attacks in Sailor Moon have always been said using English while the rest of the content remains Japanese.
7. Every Member of Usagi's Family is Named After the Creator's Family.
All the members, including Usagi herself, are named after Naoko Takeuchi's own family members. She has never gone on record to reveal the family members specifically, most likely to give them privacy. This is not unheard of for a creator to use their own family as inspiration. Stan Lee has admitted the Fantastic Four are based on some of his family members, with Reed Richards being based on Stan himself.
8. Tuxedo Mask is the "Damsel" in Distress.
In a reversal of your typical stereotype, the Princess of the Moon, Sailor Moon is required to rescue her prince more than any other character. He is the character that has been kidnapped and brainwashed more times than any other character in the franchise.
9. Luna and Artemis are Aliens
While in the anime it is made to appear they are from the Moon just like Usagi, they are in fact aliens. In the manga the evil Sailor Senshi, Sailor Tin Nyanko, says that Luna and Artemis are both from the planet Mau. While not much is known about their planet, it can be assumed the residents are "cat like people" as Sailor Tin Nyanko is also from their planet.
10. Early Designs Saw Sailor Moon with Pink Hair.
All the original five Sailor Senshi had noticeable alterations to their designs, but the most notable was Sailor Moon with pink hair. It was then planned for her hair to be blonde as Usagi and to turn silver as Sailor Moon. This was then changed again to her remaining blonde, as we all know her now, as they felt it made her stand out more when she was with the group.
11. The Love of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune.
While in the American adaption they were altered to be cousins, they have always been portrayed as a lesbian couple in the Japanese counterpart. This saw one of the first high-profile lesbian couple hit a mainstream audience and the creator has always stated how grateful she is to how well the pair were received.
12. The Starlights were Always Women.
For some reason in the anime series, they decided to alter an aspect of the Starlights. In the manga they are portrayed as women who disguise themselves as men while in civilian form, much like Sailor Uranus. This was altered to them actually being men in civilian form that turn into women. As a result their series was never adapted into the English version due to this controversy at the time.
13. Sailor Moon SuperS Movie was Nearly a Sailor Uranus and Neptune Movie.
Kunihiko Ikuhara who directed episodes from Sailor Moon R and Sailor Moon S, proposed the Sailor Moon SuperS Movie should see the focus shift to Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. It is claimed the idea was approved by the producer, but with the film not following this idea that is speculative. The idea would have seen Uranus and Neptune having to steal a talisman from Sailor Moon and the Inner Senshi to awaken a sleeping Neptune in a place called "The End of the World."
14. The Power of Neptune.
Sailor Neptune is the only member of all the Sailor Senshi to awaken on her own. All other members were either awoken by another Senshi or by the feline allies Luna and Artemis. Sailor Neptune awoke through her dreams, which has led fans to speculate how this made her become Sailor Neptune. With her psychic abilities seeming to be more powerful than Sailor Mars, it is possible her past life's mind was strong enough to awaken without help.
15. Sailor Moon is a One-Hit Wonder!
Shockingly Sailor Moon has to be classed as a one-hit wonder, as the creator of the show has never had another hit since the series first started. In over the 20 years since Sailor Moon first arrived, Naoko Takeuchi has never managed to pen another success. However with the continuing success of the franchise, I do not think she will be that worried.
Which fact surprised you the most? Is their a Sailor Moon fact you know of that was not mentioned in this article?
