This has been rumored on the user-based Disney forum, MiceChat, for a matter of weeks, but there is more fuel now regarding a possible revamp of a popular attraction. Rumors with multiple sources are suggesting that the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror located inside Disney's California Adventure theme park will be re-themed to fit Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. If everything goes according to plan, or according to the rumors, Tower of Terror will shut down this fall and re-open as a new Marvel attraction in May 2017 in conjunction with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

What will the ride story be?

This is where it gets a bit tricky. MiceAge is saying that the ride will be themed around The Collector, while SlashFilm is saying it will be themed around the prison break scene in the first Guardians film. Either way, it is sure to be an action-packed experience due to the thrill factor that comes with the existing Tower of Terror attraction. At it currently stands, the story takes you up a haunted elevator into a hotel where you encounter legendary Hollywood ghosts. Then you suddenly drop down the length of the 183-foot structure and visit "The Twilight Zone."

Are there even any Marvel rides at Disneyland?

Currently the only Marvel inclusions at Disneyland are located inside Disney's California Adventure in the form of character meet and greets. Right now you can wait for a photo op with either Captain America or Spider-Man, but there are currently no Marvel themed rides. Prior to the Star Wars Launch Bay takeover of the old Innoventions building in Disneyland, you had the chance to see a mini "Stark Expo" complete with Iron Man suits and props, a themed Captain America area with a meet and greet of Cap himself, and an Asgard themed area where you could meet Thor. If this turns out to be true, the Tower of Terror revamp would serve as the resort's first Marvel themed thrill ride.

Why is this happening?

Well, the rumors are suggesting that the new parks chairman, Bob Chapek, is looking to increase the Marvel presence inside of Disney's California Adventure not only to counteract the future opening of Star Wars Land in Disneyland, but the fact that it's been five years and there still are no Marvel attractions. Talks of an actual Marvel Land inside of either park have been circulating for a number of years now since the overwhelming success of The Avengers but nothing has ever happened beyond character meet and greets and movie props.

Final Thoughts?

Now we could chalk this up to yet another Disney rumor with no substance, like the Monstropolis takeover of Disney's California Adventure, but it must be said that MiceAge is an incredibly reliable source. They have reported on several Disney rumors that have turned out to be completely accurate. Here's what they have to say regarding this Guardians rumor:

We can tell you that the Guardians of the Galaxy rumor is true, and TDA’s executive suite was furious when the rumor leaked out from Glendale-based sources. The plan is for the original Twilight Zone backstory to be removed entirely, and replaced with an all new show based around the Collector character from the Guardians movie franchise. WDI had been testing and experimenting with the new show in the elevators for months and the Tower of Terror hourly CM’s were all aware of what WDI had been cooking up since this winter. But when the plan finally leaked online in April, the TDA executive suite hit the roof in anger.

However, a lot of Disney Parks operations are in limbo right now because of what is going on at the new Shanghai Disneyland in China. Overspending, over budgeting, and simply being behind schedule for a June 2016 opening has caused a ripple effect throughout the Disney Parks division. This has caused severe labor cuts, parade reductions, and temporary ride closures. Some future projects have also been delayed, so it's a possibility that a revamp of Tower of Terror might not happen if the summer opening of Shanghai turns out to be a complete disaster. That is, if the park even opens on time.

Unfortunately, only time will tell with this one.
