(Warning: The following could theoretically contain SPOILERS for Fox's upcoming New Mutants - albeit ones that will likely be heavily teased in promotional materials...and that anyone whose heard of the comic-books will likely not consider to be SPOILERS. Proceed with whatever level of caution that suggests to you is wise...)

Now, with X-Men: Apocalypse approaching theaters, and both Wolverine and Deadpool set to head back to the big screen in the next year or two, you could be forgiven for not paying all that much attention to Fox's other major mutant-themed movie project: New Mutants. That, though, would be a real shame, since the Josh Boone-directed movie is set to adapt one of the most beloved young super-teams in Marvel history for the very first time - and if everything clicks, it could be something really special. What's more...

We Might Finally Know Which Heroes We'll Be Seeing In New Mutants

The reason? Well, Josh Boone himself has only gone and posted a series of extremely pointed-seeming images to his Instagram account. Images which, as it turns out, look an awful lot like confirmation of exactly which comic-book New Mutants we'll be seeing turn up in the movie. Specifically:

Sam 'Cannonball' Guthrie

Roberto 'Sunspot' da Costa

Danielle 'Mirage' Moonstar

Rahne 'Wolfsbane' Sinclair

Illyana 'Magik' Rasputin

And, in possibly the most fan-pleasing news of all...

The Shapeshifting Techno-Organic Alien Known As Warlock

Who now looks nailed on to be the movie's main source of comic relief.

The big question now, though?

What Does This Mean For The Movie?

Well, for one thing, the presence of so many original New Mutants suggests that we're set to see a relatively comic-book faithful adaptation - perhaps even opening with a similar 'recruitment' story-line to that we saw in the young heroes' first comic-book appearance. That being said, there's a notable absence of three key members from the New Mutants' early years - X'ian Coy Manh, a.k.a. Karma, Amara Aquilla, a.k.a. Magma, and Doug Ramsey, a.k.a. Cypher (all of whom can be seen above).

Now, it's still unclear whether those characters' fates have simply not yet been decided upon - or whether they're intentionally being left aside to be introduced in potential sequels - but if they don't make it into the movie, there'll be a fair amount of disappointed fans out there. Karma in particular would have been a powerful and politically resonant inclusion, since her comic-book counterpart is both Asian and - in later issues - openly gay.

Fans of the main X-Men team, however, will be reassured by the presence of Illyana Rasputin - Colossus' little sister - whose connection to the senior team will surely make an armored Russian cameo all the more likely. Similarly, the presence of Professor X (the team's founder) and/or Magneto (their eventual leader) seems probable, with the similarly New Mutants-affiliated Psylocke, Kitty Pryde, Deadpool and Cable also potentially in the frame for cameos of some kind.

Or, of course, Boone's series of Instagram posts could simply turn out to be him nerding out about old-school New Mutants comics, and have no relationship whatsoever to the final line-up in the movie. But here's hoping...

What do you reckon, though?
