The Universal Monsters reboot just gained another major name, with Deadline reporting that Russell Crowe is set to join Tom Cruise in The Mummy. The report claims that Crowe will be cast in a "Jekyll-like role," which could mean that his character is meant to spin off into his own films.

Universal has been open about its plans to build a shared universe for the classic Universal Monsters including the Mummy, Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, the Invisible Man and even Van Helsing. While Dr. Jekyll — and his alter ego Mr. Hyde — isn't considered one of Universal's classic movie monsters, the Robert Louis Stevenson creation is public domain and could be included.

However, it's worth noting that "Jekyll-like" doesn't necessarily mean Jekyll himself, rather, a mad scientist sort of role that has a presence in the film.

Whatever the role might be, having two heavy hitters like Cruise and Crowe co-star in the first movie of an intended franchise is huge, particularly considering the two actors have never worked together before.
