Yes my friends, you read that title correctly. Star Wars Day has become a staple of fans for many years. Fans anticipating some Star Wars news on May the 4th can rest easy, because this little nugget of information just went viral. Believe it or not, fan-favorite Boba Fett was initially going to be featured as the main villain in Return of the Jedi. This was confirmed by Lucasfilm’s fan relations officer and unofficial adviser, Craig Miller.
Here was what Miller had to say when speaking to Inverse:
“Originally Boba Fett was set up in Empire as a character, and the third movie’s plot was going to be more about Boba Fett rescuing Han Solo and all of that. Boba was gonna be the main villain… That was set up, why he was taking Han Solo away, why there was a thing with him in the Christmas special.”
So that’s why Boba Fett’s first appearance was in the Star Wars: Christmas Special! Thank God that was never considered canon in the first place. Boba Fett’s character was so pivotal to the plot of The Empire Strikes Back, that there was no reason for him not to appear in the second Star Wars sequel.
Miller goes on to mention that the reason Fett was going to have such a larger role, was because Lucas had envisioned many more films in the near future. Lucas had actually planned a ‘third trilogy’ AFTER Return of the Jedi.
“When George decided not to make a third trilogy, he completely jettisoned that story line, which is why in the first ten minutes, Boba Fett gets bumped into and falls into the mouth of a giant monster. So he took what was planned for the third trilogy, which was the confrontation between Luke and Darth Vader, and the battle with the Emperor, and that got squished down from three movies to one movie. And that became the plot of Jedi.”
So there you have it folks. Fett was actually going to take on Han Solo and the gang many more times in the other trilogies. However, Lucas decided against it and therefore scrapped the idea for more trilogies in order to better the story and keep it focused between Luke and Vader. Had Lucas kept his original plan, Star Wars would be vastly different than what we are accustomed to. In fact, Lucas had twelve Star Wars movies in place.
“At first there was one film, and then George originally announced that it was one of 12, and there were going to be 12, and then that changed to, oh there was never 12, there was only 9, and he was going to make 9. And then during all of it, George kind of lost interest in continuing it… While we were working on The Empire Strikes Back, George decided he was going to complete the first film trilogy and that would be it.”
Wow, now that’s a lot of Star Wars movies! Although we only have seven movies up until this point with two more in the works right now, fans are craving for more. Who would have thought that Star Wars would become the juggernaut that it did? Without Lucas’s perseverance, Star Wars may never had happened. In fact, it was a life threatening car accident that made him become the filmmaker who would eventually create arguably the greatest movie franchise of all time.
Miller also makes mention what this loyal fan base has turned into. At the time, he and a lot of others were made fun of for being Star Wars fanatics. Now, people may think that you’re the coolest person ever! Nobody can deny how Star Wars has shaped not only the fantasy movie genre, but also the science fiction one as well:
“I’m proud of having been involved in something that’s become so iconic all over the world. I have a lot of friends who are like part of the 501st and that whole thing. "I grew up as a science fiction and comic book nerd, back when being one is looked down on, and now while there are still people who look down on science fiction fans as weird, I think they’re the same people who paint themselves blue for football games. Science fiction has become the accepted major genre. Every other movie, it seems, is either science fiction or fantasy or based on a comic book.”
At this time, it’s hard to say whether or not Boba Fett will actually be getting his own film. It’s been rumored that one of the future spin-off films will revolve around the popular bounty hunter, but nothing has been set in stone just yet. Fans are hoping that Fett made it out of the sarlacc pit alive and well. We’ll just have to wait and see what plans Disney and Lucasfilm have for their future installments. But for now, we at least have Rogue One and Episode VII to look forward to!
Are you surprised that Fett was almost the main villain in Return of the Jedi? Would you have wanted that to happen? Also, do you want a Boba Fett spin-off film? I’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts in the comment section below and please share! Oh yea, and May the 4th be with you all! Always.
