Lionsgate has revealed its first real look at the new team of Power Rangers! Fans will notice that the suits provide a more armored look that's become popular since the advent of the Christopher Nolan practical superhero world. It's a departure from the traditional appearance of Saban's '90s heroes, who exist in many fans' minds looking something like this:

Go Go Power Rangers!
Go Go Power Rangers!

A departure for sure, but director Dean Israelite believes the new costumes are required for the reboot's story as well as for remaining faithful to the history of the franchise, telling EW:

“The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis. These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.”

EW also talked to the movie's production designer Andrew Menzies, who had this to say about the new suits:

“Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans."

The costumes certainly reflect a darker, more modern edge, something audiences seem to be responding to, if the current box office for Batman v Superman is anything to go by. The question is, will audiences respond in a similar way to this grittier interpretation of our beloved childhood heroes?

Only time will tell. Lionsgate's Power Rangers will arrive March 24, 2017.
