Well, fellow agents, that time has come again. Season 3 of Marvel's Agents of Shield will be coming to a close this Thursday. While none of us are truly ready to say goodbye to the show for the next few months, we're even less prepared to say goodbye to yet another beloved character before the final credits of the season roll.
Ever since the first few haunting minutes of the midseason premiere, fans have been biting their nails, worrying about who they'll have to bid "farewell" to. But, can the show throw us for a loop here?
NOTE: The following article is merely a theory by the creator (that's me). I'm really just trying to pose an interesting idea that could be pretty cool to see in the finale.
SPOILERS MAY LIE AHEAD! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
In a jaw-dropping twist near the end of Season 1, a certain agent revealed his true intentions. Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Skye's (Chloe Bennet) Supervising Officer and budding love interest, had been working with the Clairvoyant (Bill Paxton) since the beginning. Per the norm, fighting ensues, ending with Agent May (Ming-Na Wen) fracturing the traitor's larynx. Ward is captured and put in solitary confinement.
You might recall that Ward still displayed feeling of affection toward Skye, even after the rest of his lies were uncovered. Of course, it became quite clear after he met Agent 33 that he no longer felt that way, his love for her has remained one of the strangest- and creepiest- points of interest in my mind.
Stuff happened. People died. Inhumans rose.
When Coulson (Clark Gregg) left Ward lying dead on an alien planet, the ancient Inhuman Hive invaded his body and brought it back to Earth. Since then, Undead Alien Ward has been plaguing SHIELD and its agents relentlessly.
Throughout the back half of the season, the agents have made a point of establishing the fact that "Ward is dead." They've repeated this line over and over again, to the point where you get the feeling that that line HAS to be of some importance. But, could they be trying to lull us into a false sense of security? Could they be wrong about Ward?
WHAT IF Ward is still alive? Hive is a very powerful Inhuman, and healing is nothing for him. Also, his power of "Sway" has been used before to control the minds of his victims, much like the way he uses the minds of his previous sacrifices. This "Sway," as FitzSimmons proved several episodes ago, gives its victim temporary brain damage.
Does that mean, perhaps, that Ward is still alive inside Hive? If he is, can he be the OLD Ward, the one we all remember from Season 1, the one that fell in love with Skye?

Now onto the theory for this week's episode: What if WARD is the one to die in a fiery explosion at the end of this season? If SHIELD finds a way to cure the Inhumans, couldn't they cure Ward? And if he does turn out to be a good Ward, and not the jerk we've dealt with for the past two seasons, could he sacrifice himself to amend the wrongs he's done in the past?
In my opinion, this would be a great way for the show to end Grant Ward's storyline. He'd come full circle, from an uptight agent who "doesn't do well with teams" to lovable hard case to traitor to enemy to Inhuman god and finally to a redeemed friend.
Could Ward save the lives of his former friends? I guess we'll find out this Tuesday.
