It now seems like the speculation can be put to rest. While it has not yet been made official by Lucasfilm, Page Six of the New York Post is reporting that Alden Ehrenreich is set to be our new scruffy looking nerf herder. After months of intense speculation on who would play the role, the young Han Solo film seems to have finally found its lead. Up to this point, it was rumored that several actors were on the short list to play the iconic smuggler on screen which has only been accomplished so far by the great Harrison Ford. Jack Reynor and Taron Egerton were among the finalists for the role along with Alden Ehrenreich who eventually won out.
While his name may not be familiar to most, Alden Ehrenreich has been praised for many roles including his most recent in Hail Caeser. He also starred in the 2013 film Beautiful Creatures along with Alice Englert. It has become customary for Lucasfilm to cast relatively unknown actors in the Star Wars universe and the tradition traces back to the original 1977 film in which even Harrison Ford was a largely unknown acting commodity.
One of the immediate questions Ehrenreich will likely receive is whether or not he has spoken with Harrison Ford and if he received any advice. Luckily for him, Ford has already given advice in older interviews from earlier this year to the future actor of the spin-off film. On several talk shows, Ford jokingly exclaimed "Don't do it!" In an interview with MTV News, he offered more honest advice saying,
"The answer is I don't know. You [gotta] figure it out for yourself. You can’t imitate either somebody else’s success or figure out what your own strengths are unless you depend on your own intuition, your own experience. Advice is tricky."
With the success of The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm seems to have hit the jackpot with new fresh talent which gives us a hopeful indication that Alden Ehrenreich may soon be on that list if the report is true. The young Han Solo spin-off is set for release on May 25, 2018 and will be directed by the Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie). In the meantime, check out a few interviews with Alden Ehrenreich below.
