Certain horror movies are classics for a reason. Sure, the weather may be getting a little brighter, but there's never a bad time to spend an evening with one of the glorious classic horror movies on Netflix. With a fine HD picture and instant streaming — and the option to watch a movie in other languages — Netflix is a great way to view the classics at home, and being a horror obsessive, it's always horror movies for me.

Classic Horror Movies on Netflix

Check out 10 of the finest classic horror movies on Netflix.

1. Alien

Released: 1979

Had science fiction ever truly been terrifying before Alien? We'd been taken to some strange places by previous classic horror movies, but Alien changed the rules. Extra-terrestrials were no longer little green men, humans with odd behavior or invisible forcefields, but drooling, snarling beasts, glistening with malice — their faces an obscene bastardization of recognizable humanoid body parts. Every sci-fi-horror since owes some debt to Alien, and it's hard to imagine this caliber of sheer originality coming around again.

Classic horror quote: ''MOTHER! I've turned the cooling unit back on. MOTHER! You bitch!''

If we're talking classic horror movies, you don't get much more classic than this scene!

2. American Psycho

Released: 2000

A more recent entry into the annals of classic horror, American Psycho weaves a stark, compelling narrative from Bret Easton Ellis's "unfilmable" novel. Writer Guinevere Turner does a remarkable job with a skillfully-wrought script, and director Mary Harron captures every sneer and splash with aplomb. Although much of the novel's extreme violence is toned down, the unreliable narrator device is kept strong and transferred to film brilliantly.

Classic horror quote: ''I like to dissect girls. Did you know I'm utterly insane?''

3. Re-Animator

Released: 1985

I legit punched the air in triumph when I found that Re-Animator is on Netflix. Horror-comedy can be a difficult balance to strike, but the twisted Lovecraftian execution of Re-Animator is unsurpassed. The immortal tagline "Herbert West has a good head on his shoulders...and another one on his desk" never fails to provide a chuckle, and the hilariously vile behavior of said severed head will keep the crowd entertained, whether that's a lone viewer or a raucous bunch.

Classic horror quote: ''You'll never get credit for my discovery. Who's going to believe a talking head? Get a job in a sideshow.''

4. From Dusk Till Dawn

Released: 1996

Sitting watching horror movies on Netflix From Dusk Till Dawn is pretty much my favorite activity, and Robert Rodriguez's vampire tale with extra-sharp teeth is always ripe for a revisit. Eminently quotable, hilariously violent and violently hilarious, From Dusk Till Dawn is more relentless (and ultimately more satisfying) than Sex Machine himself.

Classic horror quote: ''C'mon, you want pussy, come on in Pussy Lovers! If we don’t got it, you don't want it!''

5. Nightbreed

Released: 1990

Clive Barker is a multi-talented individual. Not content with writing his 1988 novella Cabal, he returned two years later to write and direct the movie version — what became Nightbreed. Boasting some of the freakiest masks ever put to horror movie celluloid, Nightbreed is a dark, fantastical horror for fans of Guillermo del Toro and Terry Gilliam. A bizarre conglomeration of creatures that only Clive Barker could create hang out in a cemetery, resulting in a very grown-up, twisted version of the Monster Mash.

Classic horror quote: ''Everything is true. God's an Astronaut. Oz is Over the Rainbow, and Midian is where the monsters live.''

6. The Prophecy

Released: 1995

Viggo Mortsensen and Christopher Walken give outstanding performances in this unconventional take on angelic myth, blurring the lines between good and evil to the point that it becomes quite uncomfortable. This is not to say that The Prophecy is not an enjoyable film; rather, it's likely to provoke deeper theological ideas that one would usually expect from a horror movie.

Classic horror quote: ''I'm an angel. I kill firstborns while their mamas watch. I turn cities into salt. I even, when I feel like it, rip the souls from little girls, and from now till kingdom come, the only thing you can count on in your existence is never understanding why.''

7. Nightmare on Elm Street 2

Released: 1985

A Nightmare on Elm Street was a hard act to follow, so Nightmare on Elm Street 2 took the wise approach of trying something different. A smoky, simmering world of violence and homoeroticism creates an atmosphere quite unlike anything else in the franchise. Robert Englund breathes a huskier, fiendish sexuality into the already oddly charming Freddy Krueger, making a decidedly singular sequel.

Classic horror quote: "I need you, Jesse. We got special work to do here, you and me. You've got the body...I've got the brain."

8. The Faculty

Released: 1998

A bit of classic late-90s horror in the form of The Faculty, which Netflix has ever so kindly provided to remind us of how small and beautiful Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett and Jordana Brewster were in 1998. You'd expect a horror movie written by Scream writer Kevin Williamson and directed by Planet Terror helmer Robert Rodriguez to be good, but The Faculty is GREAT. A true teen horror classic.

Classic horror quote: ''I always thought the only alien in this high school was me.''

9. Children of the Corn

Released: 1984

Isaac and Malachi are determined to keep their cult of childhood pure in Stephen King's classic tale of deadly harvest and blood sacrifice. The magnetic Isaac is particularly unsettling as he preaches death and destruction to his wide-eyed infant followers, creating the finest kids vs. adults horror movie since Who Can Kill A Child?(1976).

Classic horror quote: ''Make sacrifice unto Him! Bring Him the blood of the outlanders!''

10. Hellraiser

Released: 1987

If you've never seen Hellraiser, watch the original before the remake comes. If you have already seen this most classic of horror movies, check it out on Netflix again: you're never going to have a bad time watching Hellraiser. Enter the BDSM underworld of Cliver Barker's hell dimension, where malformed gimps and terrible tortures fly free and unfettered. It's unlike any horror movie you'll ever see.

Classic horror quote: ''The box. You opened it. We came. Now you must come with us, taste our pleasures.''
