Nowadays in Hollywood, since everyone and their mother is doing a sequel, it comes as no surprise that director Tim Burton considered resurrecting the character Beetlejuice, along with screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, while the two were collaborating on 2012's Dark Shadows.
It might be difficult to imagine a Beetlejuice 2, especially since the first one was released in 1988, but Burton is in absolutely no rush and has actually never officially made an announcement about the sequel coming to fruition.
Steve Weintraub of Collider had the pleasure of speaking with Burton, and couldn't help but bring up the rumors flying around regarding a second film about the striped-suited miscreant that is Beetlejuice.
Burton had this to say:
“This is the thing, it’s something that I’m interested in, but there’s so many stories [online] ... dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I’ve talked to these people and they didn’t wanna hear this so they just made up a story. ... But the fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I’ve talked to a few people. And it’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right. ... It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel], it’s not a Beetlejuice trilogy. So it’s something that if the elements are right — because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet.”
And there you have it, guys. Everything is still up in the air. It could be years before anything really picks up, as Burton is presently attached to a live-action Dumbo film for Disney.
All I have to say is, I 'm so thankful for Burton holding out for the original cast to reprise their roles. It just wouldn't be the same with other actors, and I know fans would be absolutely furious.
