While fans still wait fervently for the premiere of X-Men: Apocalypse, the reviews have been pouring in over the past few days — and they're looking x-tremely average.
Fortunately, there's always light at the end of the tunnel. Even if X-Men: Apocalypse turns out to be more like The Last Stand than Days of Future Past, there's still some fun to be had with the inevitable post-credits scene.
X-Men: Apocalypse producer and writer Simon Kinberg recently hinted to Collider that the final scene will introduce a new character, one who will be pivotal to the next few installments of the X-Men's cinematic universe:
“It’s a nod toward potentially a lot of different movies. I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there’s also another character that’s introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie.”
X-Men: Days of Future Past revealed the following film's Big Bad in its post-credits scene, so whoever appears at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse is likely to be a major player too, especially as Kinberg mentions that they will be attached to multiple movies.
Of course, this quote immediately sent the online rumor mill into overdrive, resulting in a range of suggestions that varied from Gambit and Cable to even Deadpool — but if we had to guess, our money is on Dr. Nathaniel Essex.
More commonly known as Mr. Sinister, the good doctor has shared a long and complicated history with Apocalypse in the comics, so there's certainly precedent for this in the original source material.
That's not all though.
Thanks to an image released prior to the film's release, some have speculated that a mysterious figure standing in Apocalypse's chambers could be none other than Mr. Sinister.
While he admittedly looks different to his iconic comic book incarnation, this version of Mr. Sinister could be taken from an earlier time, before Apocalypse gives him power and mutates him beyond recognition.
Wait, there's more.
In his earlier quote, Kinberg states that this new post-credits scene will specifically tie in with Wolverine 3. The film's production has been kept under wraps for the most part, but the news that Richard E. Grant was recently cast in the movie as a "mad scientist" could provide further evidence to suggest that Mr. Sinister will be hitting our screens very soon.
Mad scientists may be dime a dozen in comic books, but there are only a few important enough to play a significant role in Wolverine 3 and the wider X-Men universe at large. Although there's a possibility that Grant could be playing Dr. Abraham Cornelius, this seems rather unlikely as he was the one who infused adamantium into Wolverine's skeleton, an event that's already been covered by numerous X-Men movies.
Ultimately, all of the evidence suggests that Kinberg's mystery figure will be none other than Mr. Sinister, ready to take on Logan when Wolverine 3 is released next year.
That is of course, unless Fox decide to make every single fan boy's dream come true with one simple caption:
"The X-Men will return in 'Avengers: Infinity War.'"
Hey, a boy can dream, can't he?
