Honey I shrunk the Kids keeps popping up on lists of upcoming remakes, and if it has to happen, let's make sure it happens right! Messing with perfection is a slippery road, but if the right actors are involved it could pay homage to the original film, and open up the fun loving family movie to a new generation of fans. My daughter can't hold interest in a movie released prior to 2000, so maybe a reboot with seasoned actors is the right direction. A great example of the positive influence a remake can have is the 2014 remake of Annie; it was extremely successful, diversified the characters, and stayed true to the heart of the story. A remake does not erase or minimize the significance of an original, it just proves that it was so loved the first time, that people want to experience it again! With that in mind, take a look at my casting preferences below:
Wayne Szalinski - Johnny Galecki
Rick Moranis was instrumental to the success of the original Honey I Shrunk the Kids franchise, and saying that it will be hard to fill his shoes is a drastic understatement. The reboot will need a strong, likeable, relatable actor to take on the iconic character, and who would be better than Johnny Galecki, who plays the irresistibly nerdy physicist on The Big Bang Theory. He is already adored by millions of fans, and is familiar with all of the scientific vocabulary Szalinski spits out. It's a win, win!
Diane Szalinski - Regina Hall
Who could possibly deal with Wayne Szalinski's endless inventions? A very strong woman! Regina Hall has proven that she is comfortable playing a strong, confident woman on more than one occasion, and she can definitely rock a business suit! With that aside, Hall looks the part of a nurturing wife and mother, and definitely has the comedic background to fit in with the mood of the film.
Nick Szalinski - Miles Brown
If you have watched Black-ish, then you already know how hilarious Miles Brown is. Not only is he an incredible actor at such a young age, but he is capable of captivating an audience on his own. He has the perfect demeanor, and appearance for the role of Nick, with the genuine talent to match. Smart and adorable, basically sums up the requirements, right?
Amy Szalinski - Kylie Bunbury
Kylie Bunbury is the model image of the girl next door, but that doesn't mean she isn't capable of getting dirty, and playing a protective older sister. She has proven that she has tremendous potential as an actress, and would be a great addition to the Honey I shrunk the Kids remake.
Russ Thompson Sr. - Timothy-Olyphant
Big Russ, the hotheaded, argumentative neighbor, who doesn't hide his feelings towards the Szalinski family. The first person to come to mind is Timothy Olyphant, best known for his role as the charming, but brutally honest Raylan on FX's Justified. Olyphant could play this role in his sleep!
Russ Thompson Jr. - Daniel Sharman
The sweet, responsible neighbor, who feels inadequate due to the constant pressure from his dad, was every fangirls dream in 1989. Daniel Sharman has played a similar character on both MTV's Teen Wolf, and CW's The Originals, always feeling unworthy, but consistently proving his worth. His appearance is notable, but his magnetism is what makes him perfect for this role.
Ron Thompson - Nathan O'Toole
One thing I can say about Nathan O'toole, he has a remarkable future ahead of him. His performance as Bjorn Lothbrok on the History channel's Vikings, was mind blowing. There are seasoned actors who are incapable of acting with his level of confidence. He could easily play the arrogant bully, and quickly adjust to a more sensitive, sympathetic friend to Nick during the course of the film.
While most people would probably prefer Honey I Shrunk the Kids to remain a beloved 80s classic, a remake would definitely be a great 30th anniversary tribute if it could hold out until 2019!
