Zack Snyder does not have the best reputation among comic book fans. I agree that he has an eye for beautiful visuals and some kick-ass action, but he's lacking in one key aspect -- weaving a complex narrative into a movie that everyone can understand. That's what makes Marvel films so amazing and why most people love DC on TV.
Supposedly, Steppenwolf will be the main villain in the upcoming Justice League: Part One (they really need to change that title). He will be after three Mother Boxes that were left a hella long time ago.
I'd love to see Brainiac be involved in some way, but that kind of cheapens how huge of a threat he actually is. Let's take a look how it'd work to have Steppenwolf (he sounds like an 80's hair band name) be the secondary villain in the upcoming movie.
THRONES OF ATLANTIS
Honestly, I'm not familiar with Steppenwolf and I'm a huge fan of DC Comics. If he appears with hordes of Parademons: Would that create diminishing returns when Darkseid appears with them in the next chapter?
Remember, I'm not saying he shouldn't be in the movie, but we need someone else to play the big bad. If Darkseid is as sneaky as he should be, Steppenwolf should be manipulating events from the shadows and not seen by our heroes.
So, let's say that the two Mother Boxes are in Atlantis and Themyscira. The best way to get everyone involved is to have them fight in a neutral location. I believe after the events of Wonder Woman, the Amazons will be part of society once more and will want to help Man's World.
Steppenwolf has Ocean Master take over Atlantis and kicks Mera and Aquaman out. He also tricks him into believing the only threat left is Wonder Woman and her people. Batman will understand what's going on and we get to see an epic battle, like, Thrones of Atlantis.
And of course, Steppenwolf retrieves the two boxes. Cyborg will have the third one as a his catalyst to become a superhero. He'll play a huge part, just like he did in Justice League: War. I hope they keep Vic Stone is somewhat funny and also, scared as hell at what happened to him. This is one possibility that would tie-in everything together.
SO, WHAT ELSE?
I love Marvel and DC with almost an equal passion (Marvel has Spider-Man)! Snyder must deliver an epic movie to help save the DCEU. Even if Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad are amazing; Justice League will be the real test if DC has any chance competing with Marvel for both critical and financial success. That may sound harsh and untrue, but JL will be the measuring stick moving forward.
DC has a ton of badass villains to chose from and they need one that can tie everyone together in a cohesive story and also lead into the second part of Justice League. I know, Steppenwolf, he fits the bill, but we deserve something more.
Depending on Wonder Woman's solo movie, Ares, would be a logical choice. But he's not someone we're all dying to see on the big screen. I'm retconning what I said earlier and we need to see Braniac! Anyone who think he's just a rip-off of Ultron really needs to read some more comics. Seeing Braniac and Darkseid will be epic and hopefully if done well -- Snyder might silent a lot of the haters (they're kinda justified in their outrage. Three years)!
Let's say he's working with Steppenwolf and his plan is to send the world into chaos to retrieve the boxes. He's already scoped out Earth using LexCorp technology and he's ready to invade. That's basically it and it would be grand to see on IMAX3D! I know what you're thinking -- Kurty, why use the biggest and baddest DC's villains all at once? Snyder must do something bold (he must tell a great story to be somewhat redeemed) and using those two villains would do the trick.
Even though I was not the biggest fan of BvS, with exception of course with Gadot and Affleck's performance -- I am still super-excited for the upcoming movies in the DCEU. I love The Flash and Aquaman and I can't wait to see them working together on the big screen.
These were just a few suggestions that I have and I'd love to hear what you think in the comments section. Thank you for reading and may the Speed Force be with you!
