NBC’s Community is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated shows ever. The hilarious character combined with the myriad of pop culture references made for one of the funniest shows of my lifetime. I have said (on so many occasions that my friends are probably sick of hearing it) that season one of Community is the greatest thing to ever grace a television screen. While almost no one will agree with me on that, many will agree that it was a very funny show.
Some of the funniest parts of the show were references to movies. With so many funny people on one show, you can bet you’re going to get some great jokes about your favorite films. Here are my five favorite movie references from Community:
The Dark Knight
Abed’s Batman impression is one of the best moments from this show. His speech at the end of this episode is one of the funniest moments I’ve ever seen on TV.
Good Will Hunting
Troy wanders the Greendale halls before stumbling upon an unfixable water fountain. Naturally, he fixes it with ease. This kid is meant for special things.
This one is great because the entire episode was dedicated to referencing the classic movie. Abed in the Ken Mattingly role was hilarious.
Lord of the Rings
Chang is one of the funniest characters in the early episodes of this show. His creepy, Gollum-like role at this point in the show was hilarious before he completely became the villain of the show.
The Empire Strikes Back
This is maybe my favorite movie reference because of its subtlety. The comically iconic “I love you” line from the sci-fi classic is made even more hilarious by the nature of the relationship between Troy and Abed.
This joke took three years to develop. Can we just take a second to appreciate that on its own? At one point in each of the first three seasons, one character said “Beetlejuice” and, on queue, someone in a Beetlejuice costume walks by in the background. Talk about playing the long game
