Shane Black’s The Predator will be a retelling of the story of the famous monster from the 1987 film. Labeled a sequel to the 1987 film, The Predator will look to reinvigorate this lost franchise that has failed in numerous sequels including Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator, Alien vs Predator: Requiem, and most recently Predators.
The franchise will now be directed by one of the original actors from the first film: Shane Black. Black played the character of Rick Hawkins, who was one of the first characters to be killed off by the Predator. Black should have a firm grasp on this franchise, having played in the original film along with actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers.
What Did The Director Have To Say?
Black wishes to breathe new life into this franchise and recently gave fans a taste of what we can expect in this film. Speaking with ComingSoon, Black had this to say on the overall story and look of the creature:
“It’s not to ‘improve,’ it’s [to] make it fun, make it different, make it organically different. So what’s the extension of it that makes sense, that’s exciting? There have been a lot of changes to Stan’s design over the years. These different Predator movies have done different things. Ultimately it’s not about design to me, it’s about the story you want to tell.”
Black goes on to describe the look of the creature, while also comparing him to an Iron Man suit:
“There are people who are always going to agonize over Iron Man, what color his suit is. Maybe this weapon does a new thing, but if the story is not good I don’t give a shit what color the suit is. In The Predator we’re doing a lot of upgrades to what you would consider to be the traditional Predator technology and look, but hopefully the story is what’s going to drag people in, not just the attention to the minutiae.”
What Can We Take From These Quotes?
It shouldn’t be to anyone’s surprise that he would bring up Iron Man in this conversation. After all, he was the one who directed the often disliked Iron Man 3 film. Iron Man 3 was a movie I very much enjoyed. While most people had an issue with the major character change of the Mandarin, I did not. I felt that the change made sense in the context of the story and I was pleased with the results.
I always love it when I hear directors talk more about the story and the characters than anything else. For me, every movie should be primarily based around the characters and the story. Everything else should just smoothly fit in and not be so over the top where the action takes the audience out of the film and overshadows the characters.
What Other Films Focused On Characters And Story Over The Creature Itself?
There are a few films that come to mind where the creature didn’t overtake the characters. One of them was of course the original Predator movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The audience got to know all of the characters before they were all picked off one by one by the creature. Another example of this is the original Alien movie directed by Ridley Scott. This film did a phenomenal job when it came to great character development. You learn about the entire ship's crew from the very beginning, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when you see them all get murdered by the alien monster. Yet another example is the crew from Spielberg's Jaws, where we truly care about those characters throughout the entire film.
Shane Black looks to have a good grasp on what he wants for his movie. Sure, fans want a kick-ass Predator, but deep down we all want a great story. I'd be quite satisfied if they decided to change the style a bit, while maintaining part of the traditional look of the Predator. He mentioned that the Iron Man suits have constantly evolved along with all his weapons and tech. The Predator should be no different, especially if this movie is supposed to take place during the present day. When Black’s Predator movie hits theaters, it will have been over 30 years since the original film debuted and terrified audiences. You can bet that the Predator will have more advanced weaponry in this sequel.
Shane Black’s The Predator is slated to hit theaters on March 2, 2018.
