15 years after Training Day hit the big screen, director Antoine Fuqua is picking up right where we left off with the LAPD. Starring Bill Paxton as rogue cop Frank Rourke and Justin Cornwell as trainee Kyle Craig, Training Day TV series will center around the struggle between the two officers about how best to stop the bad guys in a messed-up world.

Detective Frank Rourke Plays By His Own Rules
Det. Frank Rourke is a seasoned LAPD officer who doesn't bat an eye about operating outside the law, whether it means shooting at an unarmed suspect or stuffing someone in the trunk of his cop car. As he puts it:
"Police work is like sex, Kyle. It's a lot more effective when it isn't pretty."
He's Already Got A Loyal Team
When Daniel Craig (Cornwell) comes on the scene as Rourke's trainee, he's joining up with Rourke's already hyper-loyal team with the Special Investigation Section. This includes Detective Rebecca Lee, played by Katrina Law from Arrow.
Rounding out Rourke's team is Tommy Campbell (Drew Van Acker of Pretty Little Liars), an ex-surfer who's fiercely loyal to his boss.
This Show Is Not Afraid To Get Controversial
With the race reversal between the main characters, and the current 2015 setting, series creators Antoine Fuqua and Jerry Bruckheimer will have the chance to tackle hypersensitive subject matter, and it looks like they have no intention of shying away from controversy.
We get an inkling of that tension in the trailer when Craig tells Rourke:
"And when you burn through every law in the books, torn down everything that separates us from them, then what's the difference? If I ever have a son, I have to warn him about cops like you."
Could Jake Hoyt Be Returning?
The concept for the Training Day TV series came from Antoine Fuqua, the director of the original 2001 movie. According to Deadline, there were initially two versions of the pilot script: the current one, and another one centering Jake Hoyt. Ethan Hawke declined to star in the new series, but has mentioned the possibility of making the occasional cameo in the series.
Regardless of whether or not Hawke decides to return to the LAPD, Training Day TV series has some pretty big shoes to fill. But if the trailer is any indication, this show is not going to back down from a challenge.
Training Day TV Show premieres midseason on CBS.
