Not satisfied with just one cinematic universe, Universal is shaping up for their second bout of interconnected narratives with the coming of The Janson Directive, the first in a line of woven narratives beefing out the already lucrative Bourne spy franchise. Its star? Dwayne Johnson.
Yes folks, after he's finished guarding lives in Baywatch and playing demented board games in Sony's Jumanji reboot, Johnson will be putting his Rock-hard pecs to work as the titular former Navy SEAL Paul Janson. And, as you can imagine, he's pretty excited about the challenge.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Johnson enthused,
"'The Janson Directive' is classic Robert Ludlum. Sharp, edgy and layered storylines. The character is complex, conflicted, badass and lethal — I can't wait to sink my teeth into this and bring him to life. Between Jamie, Akiva, Captivate and Universal, it's an exciting time to help produce and build out this awesome Ludlum universe."
Teaming up screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man), Mythology Entertainment, and Brad Fischer and William Sherak of Captivate Entertainment (producers of The Bourne Legacy and Jason Bourne) the team will collaborate to bring many works of espionage writer Robert Ludlum to life, such as The Parsifal Mosaic, The Sigma Protocol and Covert One.
According to THR, the brief outline for The Janson Directive is as follows:
'Janson' centers on Paul Janson, a former operative who is now the best private security consultant in the world. The action begins when he is framed for the murder of a prominent Nobel laureate and must join forces with the protégé sent to kill him in order to survive.
There's certainly room for exploration here, without narratives being rinsed beyond levels of acceptability. For those who've read Ludlum's novels, it's known that the plots generally circulate around and within the world of covert cops — thus, it should be relatively easy for characters to cross paths without weaving ludicrous coincidences.
And who knows, maybe we'll see Johnson and Damon team up to fight crime together one day — or not.
Jason Bourne will smash into theaters nationwide, July 29th. Watch the trailer below:
