The Cannes Film Festival has always been renowned for well, films, but also for a red carpet where the fashion extravaganza reaches unprecedented levels every year, and I'm not only talking about Elena Lenina's hairdos. The sartorial choices at Cannes are always a bit more daring than at the other red carpet events of the world.
On the Croisette, celebrities change through countless outfits throughout the day — you don't wear on a boat what you've just worn to a screening, now do you — so it's a bit easier to get a feeling of this year's looks by browsing some of the best. From Blake Lively's expert handling of her new baby bump and strong taste for princess dresses to Bella "Bare It All" Hadid's tricky dress taping, here's the top of the crop at Cannes 2016.
1. Blake Lively
The Gossip Girl actress stunned in a fitted Atelier Versace gown, which she wore with diamond jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz. Unfortunately, the quote of Sir Mix-a-Lot she used to caption her Instagram post of the dress was criticized as "tone-deaf" by many fans.
Lively also proved she could be a Disney Princess, if her other career plans ever fail. First in a dreamy Vivienne Westwood Couture dress...
Then in a fitted Atelier Versace gown with amazing details that gives off serious Elsa vibes.
2. Julia Roberts
This pretty woman was gorgeous as always in a simple Armani dress and Chopard jewels, but the most memorable part of her look is the footwear: She didn't have any. It's a nice riposte to the 2015 controversy that erupted when a group of elderly women were denied access to the red carpet — all because they weren't wearing high heels.
3. Jessica Chastain
Yellow seems to be everywhere this summer, and the Huntsman actress could not go wrong with this old-school glamour dress shape.
4. Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore opted for a darker, but nonetheless stunning look in Givenchy.
5. Susan Sarandon
Posing with Naomi Watts in Michael Kors Collection, Susan Sarandon gave women everywhere major boob envy. And if you think it's a little too much, please let me remind you of her bold move at the SAG Awards in January, where she ditched the top altogether.
6. Bella Hadid
This Cavalli dress reminds me a bit of Lively's Versace one, but it's also very flattering on Bella Hadid, Victoria's Secret model Gigi Hadid's younger sister.
The 19-year-old model later went all the way in a risky Alexandre Vauthier silky red number.
7. Anna Kendrick
What did we say about yellow? The combination of a classic fit and an eye-popping color really works on Kendrick, who's been promoting Dreamworks' Trolls with Justin Timberlake.
8. Marion Cotillard
As a regular face of Dior campaigns, it's only natural that Marion Cotillard would wear the French designer — but even without the partnership, this feels like an obvious choice for her.
9. Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart, whose new movie Personal Shopper just premiered at Cannes, wowed in Chanel day and night.
Bonus points for the bold red eye makeup!
