Do you suffer from coulrophobia? The fear of clowns is a common phobia for many people, as real as it is humorous to observe for those without the infliction. After all, clowns are supposed to be fun and a symbol of comedy gold. Right? Wrong.

The unnecessarily large red nose, the dark shadowing around the eyes that muddies the gateway to the soul, and the unrelenting smirk — yep, clowns are creepy. For that reason alone, the horror genre has utilized this fear, creating classic characters such as Stephen King's It or Batman's nemesis, the Joker.

Artist Adam Ewings has created a project which takes this one step further, snapping shots of unnerving face-painted psychopaths, creating a coulrophobic's worst nightmare in the process. Take a look at some of the most disturbing below:
