The final episode of Bates Motel season 4 ended this week on a surprisingly heart-wrenching note. With this sullen loss, viewers must be asking, what's next for Norman Bates?

It's no secret that Freddie Highmore (Norman Bates) portrays the psycho we all hate to love with brilliant ease and finesse. But is there a particular reason this role comes to Highmore so easily?

In preparation for Season 5, I decided to see what other surprises I could dig up on Bates Motel's most thrilling actor.

What I found may disturb you...

Before I move any further, take a look at this behind-the-scenes clip of Freddie Highmore visiting the Writer's Room and the original set of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960's Psycho:

Clearly, executive producers Carlton Cruse and Kerry Ehrin did their homework when looking for the perfect psycho to play Norman Bates. In fact, co-star Vera Farmiga (Norma Bates) recommended Freddie Highmore for the part.

This isn't the first time Highmore has been scouted by well-established actors. After working with Highmore in Finding Neverland, Johnny Depp requested him to play Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Incredibly, Highmore admits that he never had any acting or training classes prior to his breakout role in Finding Neverland.

Despite Highmore's incredible work on Bate's Motel (he even wrote season 4's episode "Unfaithful") and his glowing resume, Highmore has other plans for his future. In a disturbing find, it seems that Highmore's ambition hasn't always been towards acting.

"It was never who I was full-time," Highmore said in an interview with Screen Actor's Guild Foundation.

Highmore studied at Cambridge University in his hiatus from acting, having taken a break to focus on his studies between The Art of Getting By and Bates. During his studies, he indulged in various internships, including working at a law firm during his study abroad in Madrid.

As he mentions in the video, Highmore doesn't really know 9 or 13 different languages in real life. However, he did major in Arabic and Spanish while attending the university, and is considering finding a job in languages after the completion of Bates Motel.

"I enjoyed languages in school...Maybe I'll be a spy." -Highmore in SAG Foundation.

Whatever you decide to do, Freddie, your fans are 100% behind you. You brilliant psycho, you.
