[Thor: Ragnarok](tag:956858) is on the horizon, and with it come several new characters. One of the new cast members is the Asgardian warrior Valkyrie, who will be played by Tessa Thompson. Here's everything you need to know about her.
Her Real Name Is Brunnhilde
Valkyrie definitely sounds cool, but it's actually more of a title than a name. An Asgardian warrior named Brunnhilde took on the title when she was chosen by Odin to lead the Valkyrior, and elite group of female warriors whom she led for many centuries. Valkyrie and her warriors operated on both Earth and Asgard, until a pact with the Celestials forced the various pantheons of gods and goddesses to cease contact with humanity.
Speaking Of The Valkyrior...
The role of the Valkyrior was to choose which soldiers were worthy of ascendance to Valhalla. They would fly above battle fields, choosing worthy warriors to carry to the halls. Those who did not die honorably were left to fall to Hel, ruled over by the goddess of death, Hela (another new addition to Ragnarok). After Odin's deal with the Celestials, the group was less active, and has been led by other members while Valkyrie herself is busy elsewhere.
She's Got More Than One Team
Valkyrie respects Odin, but she respects heroes just as much. Odin may have ordered that the Valkyrion no longer operate on Earth, but that didn't stop Valkyrie from joining the Earth-based team of heroes known as the Defenders. She's appeared consistently in comics alongside the team and has served in their ranks longer than any other member. Several of her teammates have already debuted (or will soon) in Marvel's big and small screen entries, including Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Hawkeye, Hulk, and Luke Cage.

In addition to the Defenders, Valkyrie served as a member of Captain America's Secret Avengers strike team after his appointment as US Head of Security. She fought alongside Cap, Ant-Man, Black Widow, Beast, Nova, and Moon Knight against various covert threats to the United States and the world at large.
It's unknown right now if Thor: Ragnarok will be Valkyrie's only appearance, but she's definitely earned her place as one of Asgard's most prominent warriors. Look for her and the rest when the movie drops on November 3, 2017.
