In a video released by Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood Facebook page, we were introduced to the official "DC Universe: the Exhibit". However, during this video, the tour guide pointed to the infamous Robin suit from [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) and referred to it as the Jason Todd Robin suit. Now, it's possible he could have been just theorising like the rest of us. However, if this news is indeed true, it links the DC Extended Universe to one of the greatest comic book arcs of all time.
Not only that, it could have confirmed Jason Todd's existence in the Universe, the first time ever in a cinematic universe. Thus, let's take a look at what Jason Todd's presence (both in the past and perhaps the future) could actually mean for the DC Extended Universe:
1. Jason Todd Was Killed by the Joker
We know that Jared Leto is set to debut as the Joker in Suicide Squad later this year. We also know that Bruce stared somberly at the Robin suit that was spray-painted "HAHA Joke's on you Batman". Thus, it's pretty clear that the Joker did something unimaginable to Robin. We know all that. We drew further parallels between the famous comic book arc, "A Death in the Family". But...now that we have possible confirmation of Jason Todd's identity, it seems that the Joker may indeed have killed the former Robin. Whenever you think of the name Jason Todd, you can't help but think of the Joker. Thus, it seems as if in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman may indeed be suffering the effects of the fallout of Jason Todd's death at the hands of the Joker.
Now that we know it just might have happened...the question is when did it happen? Which brings me to the next point...
2. Could we see 'A Death in the Family' in The Batman?
The Batman starring Ben Affleck is set to be released in 2018. However, with Batman already debuting in the DCEU in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as continuing the storyline in Justice League: Part One and Justice League: Part Two, that leaves the storylines for The Batman uncertain. However, there have been many theories that The Batman could be a prequel, taking place before DC's Extended Universe timeline. With the Easter Eggs planted in Batman v Superman, including Batman seeming to have lost his heroic identity by allowing himself to be responsible for the deaths of thugs, one might wonder if The Batman may focus on
'A Death In The Family'. Perhaps we might actually get to see why Batman lost himself. Perhaps the reason for his grim outlook could be what happened to Jason Todd. Bruce Wayne did tell Clark Kent that Gotham City had a bad history with "freaks dressed like clowns". Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice paid tribute to one of the most iconic comic scenes of all time when Batman fought Superman in a scene reminiscent of 'The Dark Knight Returns'. Perhaps, The Batman may do the same with 'A Death in the Family'.
3. Could We Eventually See the Red Hood?
You were waiting for this one, weren't you? We all know the story. We all know what happened. But we also know what comes next. Long after the infamous "A Death in the Family" arc debuted, we were treated to a new, equally as iconic arc. This arc has transcended the comic books and influenced all form of Batman media, including film and video games. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the story of the Red Hood. Jason Todd's return from the dead as the vengeful vigilante, the Red Hood. This storyline took a relatively unpopular character and turned him into a beloved icon. These days, fans adore the Red Hood and it's clear that critics do too: 2010's Batman: Under the Red Hood adapted this storyline and received critical acclaim for doing so. It's impossible for us to think of Jason Todd's presence in the DCEU and not think about the Red Hood. The grim tone would be the perfect setting for such a dark, compelling and iconic storyline.
4. Possible Salvation for the DC Extended Universe
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is one of the Top 50 highest grossing films of all time. That, in itself, is a major success. It will also continue to rise, that is also a major success. However, with so much riding on DC finally branching out into their own universe, people always expect better. Batman v Superman was not very well-received by the critics. Having said that, fans were kinder to the film. And I really enjoyed it, especially the last 50 minutes! But with many already writing the grim spectacle off as a supposed "flop", DC needs to pull something big out the bag. With Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman set for releases in the coming year, there are positive hopes for them.
But when we return to the world of Batman, having the Jason Todd storyline rear its head would be the perfect way for DC to reinvigorate the DCEU. The vast majority of comic book lovers are fans of the Jason Todd storyline and with the ties to that, the Joker and the Red Hood, it just may be enough for DC to turn the tide and reap the benefits from their lucrative Extended Universe!
There you have it. We still may not know if the tour guide's words are official confirmation or just speculation like the rest of us. However, what we do know is that Jason Todd's presence in the DCEU would have a major effect on the storylines, the characters and most likely, the success. Now, as we anticipate the next portion of films to arrive from the DCEU, we are left wondering: Will we see the rise of the Red Hood?
