Hot on the heels of the release of Warner Bros. and Marvel's first tentpoles of the year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse had quite a few expectations to meet. But while early reviews were mixed, if not disappointed, the international box office shows that the X-Men franchise has still got potential.

Bryan Singer's fourth X-Men movie brought in $103.3 million from 20,596 screens across 75 markets. Their best performance was in the UK, where the box office reached $10.5 million. Mexico came in second with $8.6 million, followed by Brazil with $6.6 million and Russia with $6.5 million.

American fans will have to wait until the end of the week for the opening of X-Men: Apocalypse, and hopefully it'll be as promising as it was in Asia. Out of the 75 markets in which the movie premiered, Fox enjoyed their biggest opening weekend ever in the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

A majority of early reviewers were disappointed by the villain, Apocalypse, with Entertainment Weekly even writing that he was "uninteresting":

Part of the problem, I think, is how uninteresting Apocalypse is as a foe. With his leathery aqua, reptilian skin and cobra-cowl, he keeps trying to lure various X-Men over to the Dark Side like a broken-record Darth Vader. The guy’s kind of a relentless pest.

Thankfully, the new X-Men such as Jean Grey managed to make things more exciting; you can read more about her powers — and three other incredible moments of the movie — here.

In true superhero movie fashion, the post-credits scene also set up quite a few things, namely Wolverine 3 and Deadpool 2! Until you can see it for yourself, watch the trailer here:

X-Men: Apocalypse is out May 27 in the US.
