Audiences were first introduced to the intensely terrifying story of a boy who disappeared in his own dreams back in 2010 with Insidious. The story took off with viewers and sparked renewed interest in Saw director James Wan, as well as a new horror franchise. We are now three films into the Insidious franchise with an announced fourth installment, Insidious: Chapter 4, to be released on October 20, 2017. The film will be directed by Adam Robitel and penned by Insidious co-creator, Leigh Whannell.
However, this news hasn't been welcomed by everyone. Insidious: Chapter 3 did well at the box office, grossing $113 million worldwide, but it didn't do terribly well with all audiences as far as critical reception goes. I personally think many viewers were missing what director James Wan brings to the table when he's in the director's chair; but whether we like it or not, a fourth chapter of Insidious is coming.
Given the prequel direction that Insidious: Chapter 3 took, this has left a lot of people scratching their heads in regard to what the fourth film could possibly be about. With this article, let's focus on four possible storylines that Insidious: Chapter 4 could potentially be about.

4. The entire movie could take place in The Further
The Further has been a staple in the Insidious franchise since the first film was released in 2010. The idea of an alternate realm of reality within dreams caught on with audiences and critics and has even been featured as a haunted maze in Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights. We got a bit more of an explanation about The Further in Insidious: Chapter 3 with the origins of Elise, so it is possible that Insidious: Chapter 4 could take place almost entirely within The Further. It would give a different enough approach to what we've seen thus far, and giving more of an explanation of exactly how deep the realm goes.
3. Chapter 4 could be another prequel
The first two Insidious films treated us to the story of the Lambert family and a series of hauntings and possessions they faced. However, Insidious: Chapter 3 took us to a different family where the only familiar faces were Elise (Lin Shaye), Tucker (Angus Sampson), and Specs (Leigh Whannell). It served as a prequel to the events of the first two films and introduced us to how Elise started her business relationship with Tucker and Specs. The way Insidious: Chapter 3 was handled leaves a major possibility of Insidious: Chapter 4 to be another prequel of some kind. That could very well mean it might show the exact origins of Elise, more cases, and even prior to the events in Chapter 3.

2. It could be centered around Tucker and Specs
You can ask just about anyone what their favorite aspect of the Insidious franchise is and a lot of people will say Tucker and Specs. They add a certain comic relief to such a stressful storyline, but that doesn't mean they never get intimidated or scared by the situations they face.
If Insidious is to take another path for the fourth movie, it is a possibility to focus mainly on Tucker and Specs. We learn in Insidious: Chapter 3 that they partnered up and ran a website featuring their somewhat questionable ghost hunting experiences. They are called to the Brenner household and team up with Elise to help document and record the group's activity. For me personally, I think it would be an interesting idea to make a movie just about Tucker and Specs. It would go along with another prequel idea, but it would give insight to other paranormal experiences outside of Elise's knowledge of The Further.
1. It could take place in between two films
It has already been theorized around various websites and through internet chatter that the Insidious franchise wasn't completely finished with the Lambert family just yet. Whether Insidious: Chapter 4 will fully bring back the Lamberts remains unsaid, but we could still see them in some capacity. Last year, writer/director Leigh Whannell had this to say about a fourth film:
"I haven’t really thought about it yet. But for the purposes of this interview, I’ll say that I’d like to explore the time between this film and the first film. That whole area there where Elise has rediscovered her gift, I think you could have a lot of adventures before she arrives. So I think there is a lot of room there. We’ve kind of established Lin [Shaye] in this particular film as kind of this superhero, so that would be kind of interesting to explore in the other films."
Basically, Whannell is implying that a fourth chapter in this franchise could explore the events in between the existing films. Given what we know about The Further and what we saw with Insidious: Chapter 3, the Lambert case isn't the only instance of these weird, paranormal events. It would be interesting to see other cases happening either simultaneously around the events of the first film or around the same timeframe.
The Insidious franchise is full of terrifying moments, but can you make it through this post?
