Candace Payne became an internet sensation after posting a joyful video of herself trying on a Chewbacca mask purchased at Kohl's, winding up on Good Morning America, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and receiving a very public thanks from Kohl's and Star Wars toymakers Hasbro while remaining humble and adorable the entire time.
Chewbacca Sells Out
But there's been an unexpected consequence of the viral video: These Hasbro Chewie masks are selling like blue milk on the Skywalker moisture farm. Kohl's website has sold out of the mask, and they're not the only ones.
Amazon, Toys "R" Us, Target and Wal-Mart's sites are also completely sold out. As a result, sellers on Amazon and eBay have taken to driving up the prices to take advantage of joyful Star Wars fans, listing the $31.99 MSRP item as high as $500:
Wait It Out
Whether or not people are actually paying these prices is another story — some have sold in the $100 range — but never underestimate eBay flippers getting the zeitgeist-driven consumers to pay through the nose for the hot item of the moment. If it was the holiday season, I'm betting the prices would be even higher.
The mask has been available since Hasbro's onslaught of new Star Wars items last fall, released on what was dubbed "Force Friday." The company is expected to continue production of the masks and get more on shelves, so if you can hold out for just a bit longer, you'll be able to be roaring like Chewie soon enough.
