Disney's upcoming remake of Disney's Pete's Dragon is in the works, and it's already looking like quite the fantastical affair. For those of you who don't recall, Pete's Dragon was a 1977 Disney musical that was largely live-action, but also starred a talking animated dragon named Elliot.
The updated version stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Karl Urban, Robert Redford, Wes Bentley, Oona Laurence, and Oakes Fegley as Pete. There's still no word on just who will be voicing Elliot, but I'm sure it'll be great.
Take a look Peter and Elliot's furry new aesthetic — compliments of Weta Digital — below:
David Lowery, the director for the film, spoke to Empire and explained why he traded in Elliot's trademark green skin for something a little more fluffy and different from the dragons we've seen in pop culture as of late:
“When I went to pitch the movie to Disney, I said ‘I want him to be a furry dragon’. Pete is supposed to be cuddling up with the dragon, so let’s make him furry. I wanted him to feel not like a Game Of Thrones or Harry Potter dragon.”
He also broke down the physical components of Elliot and the animals that contributed to his look.
“A lot of [Elliott] is a dog, because people relate to dogs, but I’m a big cat person. There’s a seagull in there, and a tiger. Ultimately, it comes down to trying to make a 20 foot tall pet.”
