From the comic book to the small screen, The Walking Dead has quickly become a pillar of popular culture. So much so, in fact, that it launched spinoff series Fear The Walking Dead — which is really starting to come into its own during the second season.
During a Hawaii Comic Con panel, one fan asked comic book creator and show producer Robert Kirkman whether TWD and its sister spinoff Fear The Walking Dead have any crossover potential. First, Kirkman addressed the question of whether Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead are even on the same timeline:
"They're definitely not in the same timeline just because 'Fear the Walking Dead' starts while Rick Grimes is in a coma. So, 'Fear the Walking Dead' Season 1, to a certain extent, happens inside of Season 1 of 'The Walking Dead.'"
Just because they're not taking place at the same time doesn't mean their paths won't cross at some point. Kirkman followed up with a response on if and how their worlds would collide:
"We're already on Season 7 and this one's on Season 2 and that would be crazy. But, as far as if those characters will ever encounter each other, I mean, they're in the same universe so it's completely possible. Geographically, they're nowhere near each other so it would be somewhat farfetched if group A were to somehow encounter group B, unless over the course of many, many, many, many seasons, somehow, it made sense."
These might not be the hard "yes" AMC fans were looking for, but it's also a good sign that he didn't totally dismiss the idea. I'm sure that the network has talked about bringing the two shows together. Hopefully now it's just a matter of time.
Fear the Walking Dead airs on Sunday nights and The Walking Dead will return for its seventh season in the fall.
