As James Bond prepares for his sixth regeneration after Daniel Craig's dramatic exit from the franchise, Michael Fassbender just put himself in the frame — and if you've seen Shame, you already know that the Irishman has all the equipment to play the man with the golden gun.

In a new interview with TheYoungFolks, the X-Men: Apocalypse and Prometheus star spoke about the aspect of the character that most attracted him to playing Magneto, working with Shame director Steve McQueen in the future, and the prospect of being the next 007 — these were his illuminating words on that:

If offered the James Bond role, would you seriously consider it?

To be honest with you, I think they should reboot the James Bond series and go back to his origins as a soldier. I’ve got a great idea for it actually, so Barbara Broccoli (007 producer), talk to me!

Sure, Fassbender is probably not being entirely serious here, but the fact that he contemplates James Bond reboots in his downtime, much as I do, does suggest he'd at least be willing to think about applying for his license to thrill.

And, considering his name frequently pops up alongside the likes of Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston on Bond fans' most wanted lists, it wouldn't be the most unexpected development...

[X-Men: Apocalypse](tag:1194267) hits theaters in the US this weekend having done major business already internationally, and Fassbender has a busy year ahead with the gaming world cautiously awaiting Assassin's Creed, plus Alien: Covenant, which will either be totally awesome or totally Ridley Scott.

Still, for a role like her majesty's finest agent — and the paycheck that comes with it — you wouldn't bet against Bond going Irish for the second time.
