Oh, Barry... what have you done?
Caution: Spoilers ahead. If you read anyway and get something spoiled for you, its your own fault! don't get all butt-hurt about it!
Well, Season 2 of The Flash went high above expectations. It was a wild ride, but it's epic season finale really took the cake. Last night, Barry made a huge mistake, and it may not seem like it at first, but he could put the entire multiverse in grave danger.
After the tragic death of his father, Henry Allen, last week, Barry was near the bottom of the barrel. He was ready to kill Zoom, and even wanted to make him suffer first. Chaos ensues, and Zoom is eventually defeated without Barry losing his humanity (metahumanity?) in the process.
But the suffering was too much for Barry to take. In a wild twist in the last two minutes of the episode, he goes back in time and saves his mother from Eobard Thawne, the Reverse Flash.
Now, you might be thinking: what's so wrong with that? You probably already know the answer. Ever since Barry learned that he could time travel, his friends have warned him that changing the past could lead to dire changes in the timeline- and this will.
I acknowledge the fact that Barry became a CSI because of what he witnessed as a child and that he would have never been struck by lightning if he wasn't in his lab, therefore he would never become the Flash. But, let's assume for the sake of this article that he still does indeed become the Flash.
What changes will this bring to the multiverse? Well, let's not even talk about those creepy Time Wraiths that are going to be hunting Barry down for the rest of his life. Let's start at the beginning: Joe will never adopt Barry, leaving him unconnected to the West family. He'll lose the bonds he has with Joe and Iris, even Wally. Does this mean that we won't see much of them in Season 3? I doubt it. Barry will still remember his old life and will undoubtedly try to reforge those relationships.
But what do those relationships even mean? What did they really mean for Barry? it may not seem like much, but they were actually very important. They connected Barry to Eddie. Without a connection to Eddie, did the Flash stop the Reverse Flash a year ago? It's quite possible that Eobard Thawne will still be out there, causing havoc at his pleasure. This would actually make a lot of sense for the show-makers. If you remember, Tom Cavanagh's character departed from the show last night for the second time. Being the great actor that he is, it wouldn't be surprising to see him return to the show in the next season.
Will Eobard Thawne be the main villain of next season? It's likely.
What else? Let's see:
Everything is connected. If Barry never had to go back in time to save his mother (since he already saved her) the singularity at the end of Season 1 would have never occurred, causing major ripple effects throughout the show.
Ronnie Raymond, for instance, would still be alive. Now, this would have a major effect on Legends of Tomorrow, but let's not get into that right now.
Let's also not forget that the entirety of Season 2 occurred because of the singularity. Without it, Zoom and the rest of the Earth-2 dopplegängers would have never found their way into Earth-1. Henry Allen would still be alive. So would Killer Frost, Deathstorm, and Reverb from Earth-2. Harrison Wells and his daughter, Jesse, would never meet the Earth-1 gang.
Most importantly, however, Zoom would never be stopped. Earth-2 would fall. Could this be the vision that Cisco (Vibe) saw a few episodes ago? Did he see Zoom destroying the world from which he originated? (Yes, I know that Zoom can jump to other worlds without the singularity making portals, but who's to say that he even knew about the other worlds before the black hole?)
Needless to say, much of Season 2 never happened. While this is beneficial for Earth-1, it could also mean tragedy for Earth-2.
So, when one takes a closer look at the choice that Barry made, it is far more destructive than one might have originally thought- and could lead to disastrous circumstances for Season 3.Thanks for reading and tell me what you think in the comments below!
