Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the busiest men in Hollywood. And now it sounds like the actor might get busy in China, too.
According to Deadline, The Rock is attached to star in an action pitch from writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber that's being described as "Die Hard in China." There are reportedly multiple seven-figure offers on the table for the film, which would cast Johnson as "one man against extraordinary circumstances" in China.
Legendary and Universal have each made an offer, and so have Sony and Paramount. Deadline reports that New Line Cinema is also circling. The project would re-team Johnson with Thurber, who directed and co-wrote this summer's Central Intelligence. The Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart team-up of that movie is likely to draw big box office returns, so it's no surprise that studios are eagerly anticipating Johnson's next project.
But really, how could you go wrong with a Die Hard-like movie starring The Rock? The actor's proven he can pull off action in almost everything he's done, from his appearances in The Fast and the Furious franchise to San Andreas and more. Even better, he's a remarkably charismatic performer. While he's only dabbled in comedy on the big screen, it's easy to see Johnson shooting off John McClane-style quips. And of course, with its setting, the film should be an easy sell in China, a rapidly expanding power in the world of movies, not only in terms of production, but for viewership as well — even going so far as to completely change the format of some films to appease Chinese audiences.
