As of right now, over the next five years, about 60 adaptations of comic books are coming to the big screen. That means we will literally have an average of one new superhero movie to watch almost every month for the next half decade. It starts at Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows next month, and ends with Green Lantern Corps, or X-Force.

And that.

Is.

AWESOME!

Can you imagine having any more superhero movies to see? No?

Well, if history repeats itself, you might get even more superhero action. Some of the best superhero movies in the past never even had comic book origins!

In no particular order, I present to you seven of the best of those!

1. The Incredibles

With The Incredibles 2 FINALLY on the horizon (even though it's way out in 2019), people are already speculating that Jack Jack or Dash will be the villain (with other possibilities too)! The original will be incredibly (oh oh!) hard to live up to, but according to Christian Daily (a churchy site that REALLY likes to talk about movies, apparently), the film's producer, Lindsey Collins, says that the film is in good hands and will be pretty flippin' awesome.

Will Jack Jack attack?

2. Hancock

This film was not only one hell of an entertaining movie, it also gets the “Best Original Script Name” award. Tonight, He Comes was its original title, and boy are we glad they changed that. In an interview, Will Smith said once that some porn spoofs of famous movies have to work to get their titles, like Men in Back and The Porn Identity. But had the movie been named Tonight, He Comes, that wouldn't have been the case.

A sequel has been thrown around for eight years now, so don't expect to see it anytime soon!

3. Chronicle

This is a movie for every nerd who was bullied in high school, and every kid who spent every waking summer hour outside playing with his best friends, exploring every crack, crevice and hole in the ground. How many times did we just want to find some crazy alien thing and get superpowers, and wreak havoc?

Chronicle is another hit movie about superheroes without a comic book origin, and has a sequel that's been hanging in limbo for years. It truly needs one! It's just too bad that Dane DeHaan, (Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), had to die — or did he?

4. Darkman

This one took me by surprise. It's one of those that I haven't seen in years, and probably will hunt down and watch soon for old time's sake.

It may not have comic book origins, but the comic book actually has the movie to thank for its birth!

There's just something awesome about a guy who could wear the face of his enemy to infiltrate them.

Add Face/Off to the list of movies that I need to watch again, and soon!

5. The Toxic Avenger

Another "revenge of the nerd"-style film, this cult classic involves psychotic health club customers, their nerdy-victim-turned-toxic-superhero-named-Toxie, drug dealers, prostitution, a crooked mayor, and some bloody revenge!

The movie may end with Toxie yanking out the mayor's guts, but it was followed by sequels, an animated series, and a musical!

6. Sky High

Starring a young(er) and fairly unknown Danielle Panabaker, a.k.a. Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost on The Flash, as Layla the Plant Girl:

This movie was just fun. Being there when Will Stronghold finds his super-strength, and then again when he learns he can fly? We were just as proud as Mama Jetstream and Papa Commander!

7. Unbreakable

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan before he lost his touch, this movie's fairly slow pace and quiet tone did absolutely no harm to it whatsoever. It's just like with Sky High; being there when the heroes discover what they can do and what their weaknesses are is part of what makes these movies great!

Plus, the bad guy was even a comic book art dealer!
