It's official. Walt Disney Pictures has bought the feature film rights to produce a live-action movie revolving around Tony Cliff's graphic novel series Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant.
Set in the 19th century, the action-adventure tale follows the empowering titular heroine. Famous for her superb sword-fighting skills, the swashbuckler Delilah Dirk is also referred to as the International Mistress of Swordsmanship.
With Delilah trained in 47 sword-fighting techniques, the pirates who dare to challenge her would have to be missing half a brain, particularly since she can always escape on her flying boat to the other end of the world as a solid plan B.
With The Jungle Book having recently enjoyed box office success, it comes as no surprise that Disney would want to further invest in live-action films. Furthermore, since Frozen, there is a new era of appreciation for strong and independent heroines, which is promising for the success of this film.
Since the Delilah Dirk graphic novel is a series, this gives ample opportunity for Disney to further profit by transforming the movie into a franchise, should the original release prove successful.
Think about what happened to the last novel-series-turned-movie-franchise with a female lead. Does a little thing called The Hunger Games ring any bells? In other words, this was a smart investment for Disney to make.
In 2013, Delilah Dirk was announced a New York Times Best Seller and earned the titles of Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book of 2013 and was one of the Best Teen Books of 2013 by Kirkus Reviews.
The novel will be adapted for the big screen once writers have been finalized. The premise of the story follows Delilah Dirk as she befriends an officer named Selim, who will become her sidekick, while escaping from a Turkish prison.
This also gives Disney another opportunity to improve its image on the diversity front by way of a multiethnic cast. While the studio has included more characters of color in recent years, it's known for mostly depicting or casting caucasians.
The producers have already been selected: Roy Lee (The Departed) through his banner Vertigo Entertainment, Mark Mower (Bernie) and Justin Giritlian (The Extraordinary Fight of Atticus Walker and the Monster in his Mind). Miri Yoonwill be overseeing for Vertigo Entertainment, while Tendo Nagenda and Chaz Salembier will be on board for Disney.
While Delilah Dirk is often compared to Indiana Jones, we're excited to see this inspiring character brought to life and demonstrate her master swordsmanship.
