NBC could wind up having the biggest show on TV come this fall.
Those massive numbers come from video views on both YouTube and Facebook, which can be a little misleading. Currently the trailer's sitting at more than 6 million views on YouTube, with a vast majority coming from Facebook. But for a view to count on Facebook, you only need to watch a video for 3 seconds, so it's difficult to gauge if audiences are actually watching the whole trailer. Still, the numbers show that people are likely sharing the preview across the social media platform, which is a great sign for the upcoming show.
The trailer views also dwarf those for any other upcoming new series, and put This is Us in the realm of Hollywood's biggest hits. For comparison, two months before release, the trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens had 13.5 million views on Facebook and 71 million on YouTube. This is Us is on track to crack that 84.5 million total within days.
Why Is This Trailer So Popular?
This is Us is a low-key ensemble dramedy, making its huge trailer numbers pretty surprising. While it has recognizable faces like Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore, it doesn't boast a flashy all-star cast, and it isn't an adaptation. People have no previous connection to This is Us. But the big numbers show that the trailer is connecting with audiences.
This is Us looks like it will take a look at life's universal themes, like love, family, loss and more. That means plenty of people should be able to connect with the series. NBC still has plenty of work to do transforming those big trailer view numbers to actual viewers, but if it can pull it off, then This is Us could be one of the biggest hits of the fall.
