Not only is today the first day of June, but it is the birthday of a very special actor: Morgan Freeman. He turns 79 today, and what better way to celebrate than recognize all of the great things he has done? Probably his best-known trait is his voice, and it's pretty safe to say he has the best one of those in Hollywood. Do you agree? If not, I'll prove it to you by showing you five times he's proven himself to be the best voice in film.
5. The Lego Movie (2014)
Starting off our list is the sensational hit The Lego Movie. Usually actors famous for their voices star in a lot of animated films. However, Freeman only had to do one to showcase his dulcet talent. It is also notable to mention that this is a newer movie, so by this stage he'd long been famed for his baritone.
The Lego Movie stars many great actors, such as Chris Pratt, Will Arnett and Will Ferrell, but the best voice of the movie hands down goes to Freeman as Vitruvius. The character is the mentor of the movie and his voice is the perfect characterization to make him sound like the wisest of the master builders.
4. Glory (1989)
Freeman plays the wise grave digger John Rawlins in the historical drama. He isn't the main character in the movie, but he is definitely a highlight in what would become one of the best Civil War dramatizations of all time. In this movie, a young Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) leads the first all-black US army company, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Not only is Freeman's acting on point, but his voice literally sets the tone. The monologue below shows exactly why Freeman's Glory performance is on this list.
3. The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005–2012)
Freeman stars in The Dark Knight trilogy movies as Lucius Fox, a key associate to Thomas Wayne who runs Wayne Enterprises. His character gives Batman the big toys he needs in order to fight crime. Freeman plays a very likable character and even if it isn't one of his most challenging roles, his voice is what really makes him so believable. Granted, he has had a dozen better movies, but the significance of Lucius Fox being on this list is because anyone could have played the character as well as Freeman did, possibly even better, but it's his soothing voice that adds to the whole character persona. Lucius is a quintessential example in showing how Freeman's amazing voice can change a character in a monumental way.
2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Probably Freeman's best movie ever, this is a heartbreaking story about friendship and the law, with shocking plot twists that will keep you emotionally invested and on the edge of your seat. Freeman was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, and for good reason. This movie is a shining example of watching Freeman play an outstanding role and then elevating it with his voice. His characterization is already powerful and moving, and combined with his outstanding vocal abilities, it only makes for one of the best performances in Hollywood history.
1. Through The Wormhole (Since 2010)
Now, before you go and rage on me in the comments section, just remember what this list is about. These are not Freeman's best performances, but the top five roles that show he has the best voice in Hollywood. So, what better example is there than Through the Wormhole? You get to listen to Freeman's soothing voice for 40 minutes each week as he discusses mind-blowing topics and explores the deepest and biggest questions that mankind has pondered for centuries. Never watched an episode? Well, go ahead and do just that and you will see how Freeman utilizes his famous instrument better than in any other role.
I can easily say that Freeman has the best voice of anyone in Hollywood. The man is and will always be a legend. You are most likely not reading this, Mr. Freeman, but if you are, happy birthday to you!
