Details on Marvel Studios' first female-led solo film Captain Marvel have been sparse, as the production is still in the early stages before its slated March 2019 release. However recent developments might point towards a new front runner to play the lead role of Carol Danvers, and no, it's not Emily Blunt.

Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson, (The Room) has been pegged by Variety as the top pick for the film as early talks unfold. Marvel has made no official comment. This rumour comes hot off the heels of a fantastic string of casting news in other upcoming Marvel Studios productions, most recently Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther.

In April of last year, Marvel tapped Nicole Perlman & Meg LeFauve to write Captain Marvel, Perlman already with experience within the cosmic side of the MCU, having previously contributing major writing credits in 2014's surprise smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy.

Other recent developments have pointed towards potential directors, with Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and Niki Caro (Whale Rider, McFarland, USA) apparently rumoured to be in the mix. We will probably be hearing more about that soon as the press on Captain Marvel starts to heat up.

This will no doubt add to the growing excitement surrounding Marvel's first female-led solo film. If Larson does nab the role, it also means more than just a solo franchise, as Carol Danvers was recently sort of confirmed to have a role in the upcoming mega blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War by writers Anthony & Joe Russo, who are not resting on their laurels from Captain America: Civil War, already diving head-in to pre-production on the Avengers threequel (and fourquel).

As Marvel Studios launches headfirst into their ambitious Phase 3, the rapid expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will surely raise expectations for future blockbuster franchise events. One thing is for certain, it is an exciting time to be a Marvel comics fan, or any comic fan for that matter.

So who else would love to see Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes AKA War Machine as Carol Danvers' mentor in the airforce?
