With the news that Jason Voorhees's origin will be revealed in the next instalment of the Friday the 13th franchise, diehard fans like myself took the opportunity to go back and re-watch his cinematic debut in Friday the 13th Pt 2, which celebrates it's 35th anniversary this year.
Friday the 13th Pt 2 is easily one of the best movies released in the franchise to date, opening with the shocking murder of the first film's survivor, Alice Hardy. The sequence was an extremely effective way to introduce Jason, who takes revenge on his mother's killer by plunging a screwdriver through her head.
The movie then cuts forward five years later, where we join a fresh batch of horny counsellors soon to be massacred by Jason at Crystal Lake. Before that happens though, the group begin sharing a campfire story about Alice's fate, who vanished mysteriously just two months after surviving the original attack in the first Friday the 13th.
The story the group tells suggests that Alice's body was never found, which means that Jason must have disposed of it somehow before the police arrived. While the fate of Alice's corpse is never explicitly revealed, a writer over at Bloody Disgusting has finally figured out what Jason chose to do with his victim's body and shockingly, it ain't pretty.
After most of the counsellors have been punished (murdered) for engaging in naughty shenanigans (sex), final girl Ginny Field discovers Jason's secret hideout in the woods and — Let's just say a prompt visit to Ikea wouldn't be amiss.
Jason's hidey-hole is basically an old, dilapidated shack that contains a tribute to his mother, featuring her severed head positioned front and centre as a delightful centrepiece. Surrounding the altar are a number of freshly-killed corpses and one decomposed body that's obviously been hanging around longer than the others.
If you look extremely closely at the altar at just the right moment, you may notice that the older corpse has a long, sharp object sticking out of it's head in the exact same place that Alice was stabbed in the film's opening scene.
It seems that Jason just couldn't let go of the fact that Alice killed his mother, so he decided to offer her dead body as a tribute instead of taking the normal route of burial or cremation. Whether Jason's a disturbed psycho or a cute lil Mommy's boy depends on your perspective, but it's hard to deny that he cares.
Relive Alice's death one more from the opening of Friday the 13th Pt 2.
