This whole era of revivals is like the gift that keeps on giving. First, we got The X Files, then we got word that Prison Break was coming back to us and now Netflix have revived Gilmore Girls. But Showtime have also jumped on the revival bandwagon, commissioning a revival of acclaimed '90s series Twin Peaks. Well now we have some big news regarding that. According to a recent report from Vulture, Showtime chief David Nevins has shed a little light on when we can expect to see the highly anticipated continuation of Twin Peaks air on TV. As Nevins gathered reporters to make multiple announcements about this year's schedule, including the news that Homeland wouldn't be returning until 2017 and Shameless would be returning earlier than expected, he announced an update about the upcoming revival of Twin Peaks. According to Nevins, showrunner David Lynch is currently in the process of editing the series and as of this moment, Showtime plans to air the Twin Peaks revival in "the second quarter" of 2017.
While this is not an exact confirmation of an air date, Vulture noted that up until now, the network hadn't been specific about the information, except for the odd "coming early 2017" remark. However, now we can expect the revival to hit our screens sometime between April and June of next year!
For those of you who don't know, Twin Peaks was a critically acclaimed TV series that originally ran on ABC from 1990-1991. The series centred on the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer and the investigation headed by FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper. It all took place in the fictional town of Twin Peaks, Washington. Despite high praise, ratings began to decline and the show was ultimately cancelled after two seasons. It has since gained a massive cult following and is renowned as one of the greatest supernatural mystery series of all time.
Once the news broke that Showtime would be reviving Twin Peaks for a limited series, fans were incredibly happy. Furthermore, anticipation again skyrocketed once the amazing cast list of the revival was revealed, highlighting that many of the beloved original characters will be joined by a star-studded cast of newbies as well.
So there you have it, the news you were (kind of) waiting for. We now know that the Twin Peaks revival will air on Showtime sometime in mid 2017. Much like the TV revivals so far, it is sure to be a TV event! Plenty of time to binge-watch the orginal series before then, right?
