Director James Gunn is currently in production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is sure to bring more intergalactic action to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But a new photo from the set of the film reveals that the Guardians might be joined by another mighty hero.
Earlier today, the director posted a photo to Instagram of himself holding Thor's hammer Mjolnir, leading to speculation that the Asgardian god may make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
It wouldn't be too crazy to see Thor head to space for a cameo in the film. After all, his home of Asgard is another world all its own, and the hero traversed various realms in Thor: The Dark World. Moreover, the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok is rumored to be a space-faring team-up between Thor and the Hulk, with a possible storyline influenced by the "Planet Hulk" comics arc. That story found the Hulk fighting for his life as a gladiator on a distant planet, and could be teased in the Guardians sequel.
Still, the photo could also indicate that Mjolnir will make an appearance in the film, sans Thor. Perhaps the legendary weapon has fallen into the hands of The Collector, who (unsurprisingly) amasses artifacts from across the cosmos. Benicio Del Toro appeared in the first Guardians as the character, and while it was previously reported the star wouldn't return for the sequel, it's possible things have changed, or that the impressive collection will appear without its owner.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017. Do you want to see Thor make an appearance in the movie? Let us know in the comments.
