Now that you have had more than a couple of weeks to process the outcome of the season 3 finale of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., let's talk about the last few minutes of the episode.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains massive spoilers from the Season finale of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. So if you haven't had the time to watch it yet, go watch the episode, and then come back. You have been WARNED!

During the last 10 minutes of two-part finale, we finally got to see the scene that the show has been building up to since that flash-forward scene in the 15th episode. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. teased the death of one of the agents in a quinjet and thus began speculation about which agent it could possibly be. Before the finale aired, everyone was certain that only one person would be on that quinjet. But there were not one, but two agents on that quinjet before it blew up in space — one present, one former. The show decided to kill off two characters, both of whom at some point on the show were a love interest for Skye (or Daisy) — Grant Ward and Lincoln Campbell.

The Final Few Minutes of the Episode

The scene featuring Grant's (or Hive) and Lincoln's death didn't last long though. Soon after the quinjet blew up, we got yet another flash-forward. This flash-forward was 6 months into the future. By the time we reach that scene when Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its 4th Season, Quake (Daisy) would've gone rogue, Fitz would've left S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson and MacKenzie would've been working under a new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., which brings us to the question: Who'll be the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

List of Possible Candidates

Phil Coulson took over from Nick Fury as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But who'll be the one to replace Coulson? Here's a list of possible candidates who could be Coulson's successor:

1. Melinda May

Agent May is the most likely candidate to be the new Director. She was neither mentioned nor shown in the flash-forward scenes. We saw Coulson, MacKenzie and Daisy in those scenes, while Fitz and Simmons were mentioned. But May was clearly missing from those flash-forward scenes. Ming-Na Wen will obviously be returning for the next season. Maybe the writers decided to keep her whereabouts a secret because they didn't want to reveal right away that the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. would be Melinda May.

2. General Talbot

General Talbot is also another genuine contender in the running to become the new Director. If S.H.I.E.L.D. is faced by a hostile takeover from the government, General Talbot is the most likely person to be made the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

3. Nick Fury

Nick Fury could return to become the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. yet again. But this one is least likely to happen, simply because of the fact that Samuel L. Jackson is such a big name in Hollywood. But if they managed to get Samuel L. Jackson by some miracle, TV rating for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will definitely go up.

4. Maria Hill

Maria Hill was seen in the pilot episode of the show and has appeared in a couple of episodes since. Just like her former boss, Nick Fury, she was last seen in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. When Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 was being aired, Cobie Smulders was busy filming the final Season of How I Met Your Mother. As a result, she couldn't be a part of the show as much. But now would be a good time to bring her back.

5. Sharon Carter

Sharon Carter a.k.a. Agent 13 was last seen working for CIA in Captain America: Civil War. But the death of her aunt Peggy Carter, the founder of S.H.I.E.L.D., could make her want to follow her legacy and rejoin S.H.I.E.L.D. as the new Director. How can ABC Network make up for the cancellation of Agent Carter? Well, they could make another Agent Carter the new Director.

We'll have to wait till Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its fourth season to find out who the new Director will be. It could be any one of the candidates mentioned above or it could be someone else entirely. Let us know who you think will be the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
