Let's face it, 2016 has been a cruel beast so far. It seems like every couple of weeks we lose another icon from the world of cinema (Alan Rickman), music (David Bowie) or sport (Muhammad Ali). So when news surfaced that Jack Black had died tragically premature at 46-years-old, the first response was: "Not again, 2016. Not again!"

On Sunday the official Twitter page for Black's comedic rock band, Tenacious D, posted a Tweet appearing to confirm the death of 46-year-old actor and musician, causing fans to react with confusion and grief. The Tweet stated:

“I’m sad to officially announce the death of Jack Black at the age of 46, rest in peace brother.”

It was followed by a number of additional Tweets referring to Black's death, including one with the simple hashtag .

In today's society, social media is, for many, the first outlet for breaking news. However, in a stark reminder that not everything we see online can be taken as gospel, it turns out the entire thing was a distasteful death hoax.

Tenacious D — made up of the duo of Black and Kyle Gass — later removed the original Tweet, and reassured the Twitter-sphere that Black is alive and well:

While Tenacious D guitarist John Konesky also issued reassurance:

The flurry of Tweets fabricating Black's untimely demise were linked to a hacker with the (fairly apt) username @Ruthless, who's account has now been suspended.

Unfortunately for the School of Rock (2003) star, the grim hoax is something he has experienced before, being on the receiving end of death hoaxes in 2012 and 2014. In 2012, the faux cause of death was falling from a cliff in New Zealand, while two years later it was claimed the Hollywood actor had died from a stroke.

But, for now, we can rest easy knowing Jack Black is still alive and well and, presumably, still stickin' it to the man.
