After the New 52 relaunch of the entire DC Comics line back in 2011, you may well think the comic book giant would ride that wave out just a little bit longer before bringing everything back to ground again.

But you'd be wrong, as DC Rebirth kicks everything into a higher gear with a few mind-bending twists this month as another shiny new relaunch begins to unfold. As usual, the main elements of the iconic characters remain the same, but everything else is slightly off kilter.

Batman Rebirth

Such as the first issue of Batman Rebirth (which landed back at the beginning of the month), completely revitalizing the character of Calendar Man and introducing a new sidekick for Batman — but not a Robin this time around.

But Calendar Man isn't the only threat stalking the streets of Gotham in the Rebirth universe, as the preview for this week's Detective Comics relaunch reveals that there could be another Batman hiding in the shadows of the Rebirth universe.

Rise Of The Batmen

"Rise of the Batmen" — the first issue of the new iteration of the long-running Detective Comics — is set to land Wednesday, June 8, written by James Tynion IV and penned by Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira. The official synopsis is as follows:

An unknown predator begins outdoing Batman, taking down dangerous threats with military precision. It’s up to the Dark Knight and series co-star Batwoman to rally and train the young heroes of Gotham City to end this mysterious threat!

WHAT NOW: Batman and Batwoman begin training [Spoiler], Red Robin and Cassandra Cain, but is the villainous Clayface ready for redemption?

But you don't have to wait until Wednesday to get a sneaky peek beneath the cover of Detective Comics #934, as the first five pages have now been released online. And they seem to suggest that the word "Batmen" in the chapter title might not just be a reference to the Batfamily themselves.

Detective Comics #934 Preview

Detective Comics #934 opens with the caped crusader on the trail of the assassin-turned-hero Azrael, who may be back wearing his villain pants this time around. Batman pursues the god-fearing assassin across the rooftops of the Gotham, cornering him against the stained glass window of a church.

Azrael either falls or is pushed through the window, and the two continue their brutal fight within the halls of the church, which culminates with Batman shocking him, the assassin falling to the ground almost dead.

But then — Shia surprise — the real Batman shows up, and the imposter makes himself scarce, leaving behind a Bat-shaped drone to keep an Bat-eye on Batman (so many Bats). "Who did this to you?" Batman asks the broken Azrael. " did" he responds, fear in his eyes, as the imposter Batman looks on from behind the relative safety of a computer screen.

So there you have it, there's a new Batman-styled vigilante in town in Detective Comics Rebirth, and he looks to be setting out to do what Batman will not — kill.

This wouldn't be the first time Batman has come up against a dangerous vigilante lacking in morals — but the fact that this one also wears a Bat-cowl means that this time around, things are gonna get personal.
