Nowadays, Joe Manganiello is everywhere - a successful actor and author (if you are interested in getting fit, you might wanna check out Evolution), an aspiring director, a husband of the gorgeous Sofia Vergara and (above all else) one of the fittest men of all time (as voted by Men's Health readers).
However, Manganiello wasn't always so successful and certainly he didn't achieve his fame and dream body overnight. Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, although he was the captain of his high school, team he was the "skinniest" player in the roster and couldn't do even one pull-up or dip, as explained in the video below:
Hence, Joe Manganiello realized that he needed to work on his body, grow and evolve and spent more than 25 years doing so. Throughout his journey, there were many highs and lows and in spite of the fact that he wasn't blessed with amazing genetics, Manganiello was able to become the best version of himself through his consistency, dedication and tenacity.
Looking at the picture below you can certainly see he's come a long way:
In the following lines, I will show how the Magic Mike actor has physically evolved over the years, focusing on his most famous roles:
Flash Thompson in the Original Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007)
Flash Thompson marked Manganiello's first movie role - and in a big franchise, nonetheless! As it can be seen, the 25-year old had managed to pack on some size and yet, he still hadn't developed the chiseled physique that made him and icon later on.
Brad Morris in How I Met Your Mother (2006-2012)
Similar to the Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002), throughout the early HIMYM seasons that Manganiello took part in, he still had a considerably high bodyfat percentage and yet, he definitely had muscle size.
Just compare the above picture with the video which is from the eight season of the show that premiered in 2012 and see the difference!
Owen Morello in One Tree Hill (2008-2010)
In One Tree Hill, it was apparent that Manganiello was getting leaner and buffer by the second, as well as finally discovering his signature facial hair style.
Alcide Herveaux in True Blood (2010-2014)
Playing werewolf Alcide Herveaux in True Blood was definitely Joe's breakout role and catapulted his status as one of Hollywood's sexiest and fittest actors. Here is an insight into his True Blood workout", as taken from an interview with Men's Health:
"Well, I have to be camera-ready. When I first started on True Blood I had to do a lot of interval training and keep to a pretty strict diet – just moving my bodyweight around to get lean. But now I’ve started doing a lot of Olympic-style lifting: lots of squats, lots of clean-and-presses, a lot of deadlifts. The things that real sports professionals do all the time. In the last couple of years I’ve got the aesthetic side of the workout down. Now, for me, it’s all about getting practically strong."
Big Dick Ritchie in Magic Mike (2012) and Magic Mike XXL (2015)
Playing Big Dick Ritchie and releasing Evolution, further solidified Manganiello's image as a fitness icon and were the biggest steps (so far) in a glorious journey which had started 25 years earlier.
These are only a few examples of the unbelievable physical transformation that Manganiello has been able to achieve, the big question is what will he do next?
